With a Scottish family as powerful as the Douglas family, several non-related families would have been supportive for favor and/or protection. These allied families may have intermarried into the House of Douglas several times but they truly could not be called septs. It makes much more sense under these circumstance to consider the list of names associated with the House of Douglas as a list of septs and allied families to acknowledge the historical and familial connections between these names and Douglas without ascribing any particular subordinate classification or attenuation to any name in the list. This booklet is the culmination of research by the author gleaned from the records of the Clan Douglas Society of North America, LTD, and from numerous sources of Scottish family histories.
