Edwardian Race Horse  Study – Oil on Artist Board (c.1905–1915) Manner of Alfred Munnings
This atmospheric Edwardian oil study captures a classic pre-race paddock scene, painted with confident, lively brushwork on prepared artist board. A jockey in white and green silks sits poised on a chestnut horse as figures gather in the background, giving the composition a wonderful sense of movement, anticipation, and race-day energy.

Painted around 1905–1915, the work shows the loose, impressionistic handling typical of British sporting artists of the early 20th century. The study format gives it irresistible charm – quick, expressive, and full of immediacy – making it a superb decorative piece for both country house interiors and modern spaces with an equestrian or sporting aesthetic.

Presented in its original Edwardian gilt frame, richly detailed and beautifully aged, the painting has excellent presence on the wall and would sit perfectly in a hallway, study, library, or period sporting interior.

?? Provenance Story

This atmospheric equestrian study originates from a private country house collection in Surrey, where it had hung for several decades in a gentleman’s study. According to family notes passed down with the contents of the estate, the painting was acquired in the early 1960s from a small antique dealer in Newmarket who specialised in racing memorabilia and artists associated with the East Anglian racing circuit.

Although unsigned, the work was believed by the previous owner to be by a trained British sporting artist active in the early 20th century. Its confident handling, lively palette, and classic paddock subject place it firmly within the circle of Edwardian equestrian painters who worked in and around major racecourses such as Epsom, Ascot, and Newmarket during the years before the First World War. The study was originally framed during the Edwardian period, and the gilt frame remains with the painting today.

The family who owned the piece displayed it alongside other race-day prints, trophies, and photographs, and it was considered a favourite reminder of their long-standing connection to the racing world. When the estate was dispersed in 2024, the painting was purchased directly from the descendants, who confirmed its long history in the family home.

A charming and authentic example of early 20th-century British sporting art, preserved with its original frame and carrying the quiet history of an English country house collection.

Weak
Format: Paperback
I very weak primer on apologetics. The author is really not convinced himself; so, it is difficult for him to present convincing arguments.
