This is a photo of Kalihiwai from about 1900–perhaps a decade after Delbert’s father established his rice plantation. The photo was taken from the old wagon trail above the Goo home. That trail connected Kalihiwai to Wanini and Hanalei long before the construction of the paved road that now cuts the bluff at kilohana.

Old man Goo, “The Pake” (Uncle or “Chinese” in Hawaiian), built the barn in the center of the photo to store rice, tools, and equipment. His coolies bunked on the second floor—every night, as many as 20 smoked their opium up there before falling asleep. The lean-to housed the kitchen where Delbert’s mom cooked for the crew. The mortar and stone threshing floor was just beyond the barn. The house and outbuildings on the hill were on a separate “kuleana” (traditional Hawaiian smallholding) owned by relatives of the Kong Lung family.

“The Pake” expanded his plantation far beyond the old Hawaiian taro “lo’i” (pond fields) and improved the valley’s irrigation system. To grow taro, the Hawaiians diverted only the low flow volume from the Kalihiwai River. Taro is a 13-month crop requiring a near continuous and substantial flow of cool, clean water, so the Hawaiians sized their pondfield plantings based on the year round availability of dependable base flows. Rice is a 4 to 5 month crop planted in the wet season and harvested in the dry. Rice paddies require a quick fill then just enough to keep them full—not the constant circulation of cool, clean water taro needs. So the Old Man increased the capacity of the diversion and irrigation ditch to handle higher flows.

The coolies dug a barge canal from the river to a landing in front of the barn. The canal was called “Pake Ditch” and is still call “Pake Ditch” to this day.  The Old Man bought unhulled rice (paddy) from all the farmers in the valley. They’d bring their paddy in wagons and on pack horses from as far as Kakimoto and Matagawa above Namahana, four miles up the valley as the “pueo” flys--double that on the old valley trail with its dozens of low water fords. The Old Man would mill the other farmers’ rice along with his, bag it, barge it to the river mouth, load it into whale boats and row it out to schooners anchored in the bay, bound for Honolulu.

The Old Man eventually bought many of the kuleana in the valley but most of his plantation was on land leased from the German owned Lihue Plantation. The Germans’ land was confiscated in World War One and bought by Amfac. The 1957 tsunami  washed away all the buildings on the valley floor, destroyed the plantation‘s infrastructure, and filled the Pake Ditch to the top of its banks with debris. That was the end of rice in Kalihiwai. In the 70’s Amfac sold to developers. By then all the rice land was covered with towering, impenetrable hau bush jungle and under several feet of water--though Delbert had kept 5-acres just below the house cleared and drained.  There he grew papaya and eggplant, but without Pake Ditch to drain it, the rest of the valley was useless—a swamp. Delbert showed me this photo and said, “Let’s go partners. Buy the place. Nobody wants it. We can cut a good deal. Most of that swamp is 4 to 6 feet above the river.  I know how to drain it.” Delbert owned most of the kuleana in the valley and traded them to the developer for 15 acres. Though the flood zone kuleana were worth little, the developer was able to relocate the kuleana, along with their house permit rights, to lots they subdivided above the valley along Kalihiwai Road. The County encourage this transfer as the new lots were far above the tsumami limits where their was vehicular access, water, utilities and County services. I got the remaining 25 acres, most of it underwater, at very good terms. As Delbert said, “Nobody wants it!”

This photo became the site plan for our development. Delbert knew where to find the old Pake Ditch under the tidal wave debris. He knew where the old building foundations were buried, where the culverts and roads should go, and where to excavate the old stream bed that once connected Kahoe Falls, the main source of the swamp, with Pake Ditch. Once we had the valley drained, Delbert gave me an old plans shack he got from a friend working on a road project. We set the little shack on concrete blocks over his father’s threshing floor. At the door we placed a broken chunk of brick and mortar stairs we dug out of the ditch. Maile and I spent every weekend working and playing in the valley. We had a shovel for our outhouse, bathed in the ditch and slept in sleeping bags on the plans table. Of course we went to Uncle Delbert’s for dinner.

The historic and far-reaching accomplishments of his father, The Pake, plus Delbert’s vision, knowledge, capacity for making deals and taking chances, gave our families a great gift—enough to do something but not enough to do nothing. Now there are four generations of family in the valley: homes, orchards, gardens, pastures, lo’i and livestock—owned by Goos, Walters, Chandlers, Keleiohis, and Yukimuras. The Wehrheim's are back in the old house in the bustling metropolis of Lihue but are frequent visitors and, of course, always stay for dinner.

PHOTO PRINTS
Prints are on Hahnemuhle heavyweight (315 gsm) 100% archival cotton “Photo Rag Baryta” paper, using archival inks and archival spray coating. They have a 200-year life expectancy before any deterioration of the print will be observed when stored, handled, and displayed under archival conditions.

CANVAS PRINTS
What is often called “Gallery Wrap Canvas” is a fine art inkjet (Giclee) print on canvas, with printed edges to wrap around a wooden stretcher frame, like a painting. With canvas prints, your print image is still the same size, but given a "wrap effect" around the edges to account for the thickness of the stretcher. Canvas can be rolled and shipped with no effect to the print. Your local framing shop should be able to mount the canvas to stretchers at a fraction of the cost of traditional framing, making for an overall more economical way to get fine art on your wall. The canvas is printed to wrap around a 1-inch stretcher (1.5 inches on larger sizes). Specifications will be provided with your order. Feel free to contact us if you need guidance with your canvas order.

John prints, titles, dates, and signs all of his photos.

I absolutely love the Off Campus TV Series!! I have watched it 5 times already. I ordered the Off Campus Book Series. I just finished reading Book 1 - The Deal. It was absolutely amazing!! It was well written and I fell in love with Garret and Hannah. Love the Characters and both their storylines. I was so excited when reading in the Book that the Hockey Championship was being held at the Wells Fargo Center, Home of the Philadelphia Flyers, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I live 30 minutes from (Philly) Philadelphia Pennsylvania. I would like to shout out to the Author ✍️ very well written!! Can’t wait to read the whole Book 📕 Series!!

A Perfect Finale to Off-Campus and Briar U
Format: Paperback
The Legacy was everything I hoped for and more—a perfect conclusion to Elle Kennedy’s Off-Campus world. It felt like catching up with old friends and seeing how far they’ve come since we first met them. I laughed, swooned, and even teared up at times—it’s such a satisfying send-off for a series I’ve loved so much. One of the best parts of this book is how we get to spend time with each of the beloved couples: Hannah & Garrett – Still as sweet and solid as ever, proving that their love is built to last. Grace & Logan – Fun, flirty, and full of chemistry, but also showing real growth in how they handle life’s challenges together. Allie & Dean – Emotional, heartfelt, and just as fiery as they’ve always been—Dean never fails to make me smile. Sabrina & Tucker – Tender, mature, and grounded, yet still so full of love. Their storyline was especially touching to see. Elle Kennedy weaves their stories together seamlessly, balancing humor, heartfelt moments, and romance. Each section gives closure while still keeping things exciting—it’s like getting four mini love stories wrapped into one beautiful package. I highly recommend reading The Legacy after finishing both the Off-Campus and Briar U series. It brings everything full circle, and you’ll appreciate all the cameos, callbacks, and little details so much more. Plus, it’s the perfect lead-in before starting the new Campus Diaries series, since you get that emotional closure first. Overall, The Legacy is a heartfelt, fun, and incredibly satisfying finale that left me with a huge smile. If you loved the Off-Campus or Briar U books, this one is a must-read.

The Legacy
Format: Kindle
I had so much fun with this book! Getting to see every couple again and see them navigate through their challenges in their unique, funny ways. Loved it! Tucker is still my favorite guy. Also loved how they made this like a twisted sisterhood of the traveling pant’s story. So funny.

Off-Campus Conclusion
Format: Kindle
This review is one of the hardest ones I've ever written. The Off-Campus series is without a doubt one of the best series I've ever read. I have loved these characters, their stories, and the growth we've seen along the way. I love the love they all share. A quick refresher of the 4 previous books and how I rated them: The Deal - Garrett and Hannah - 5/5 (10/5 if it were an option.) The Mistake - Logan and Grace - 5/5 The Score - Dean and Allie - 5/5 The Goal - Tucker and Sabrina - 4/5 I was so excited about this book! A glimpse into some of my favorite characters, and where are they now. But, as much as it breaks my heart to say it, this book fell flat. First, let's talk about the pros. 1. Throughout the first four books, one of my favorite parts was the bromance and friendships between Garrett, Logan, Dean, and Tucker. THIS BOOK DOES SUCH A GOOD JOB WITH THAT, AND OMG IT MAKES MY HEART HAPPY. Their friendship is front and center and I loved every part of it. 2. Logan and Grace's and Tucker and Sabrina's installments in this book are the best in my opinion. I do wish that the rest of the gang could have been there for Logan and Grace's wedding, but it was oddly fitting for them. 3. This book is laugh-out-loud funny. 4. I love, love, loved watching Sabrina fighting for her man when he got arrested. Like yes, queen! Now for the cons: 1. The biggest reason this book physically pained me is how Garrett and Hannah's part was written. It was so far out of character and literally broke my heart. Their story is the last one of this book. They're my favorite couple from the series, and the part of The Legacy I was looking forward to the most. And boy, it let me down and broke my heart. I actually went back and reread The Deal not long after finishing The Legacy because I was so confused by this part of the book. I had to go back and restore my love in Garrett and Hannah. In The Legacy, I feel Garrett does not have his life together, and he's mean, especially to Hannah. Like we get it, Phil Graham is the worst, but Garrett never used to take it out on Hannah or let it affect their relationship, but boy does it ever here. And Hannah hiding the fact she's pregnant from Garrett for so long?! What is up with that?? Ugh, it literally hurts to be writing this because I looked forward to this and wanted to love it so much but just didn't. 2. Allie could not have been more immature in their section. I get she was scared, but girlfriend, c'mon. When Dean Di Laurentis offers you a ring and his last name, you don't tell the man no. A rating of the different couples parts of this book: The Pact - Logan and Grace - 4/5 stars The Proposal - Dean and Allie - 3/5 stars The Honeymoon - Tucker and Sabrina - 4/5 The Legacy - Garrett and Hannah - 2/5 As grateful as I was to get to go back and hang out with the Off-Campus crew again, it just fell flat for me. I wish we could get a redo. See them all now. How's marriage going? How are the kids? How's work? Get to laugh it up with the gang again, and fall in love with the love they share all over, especially Hannah and Garrett. I feel this book lacked the finality and closure this beautiful series deserved. Truthfully, it would have been better off without this installment altogether (Which I literally HATE to say.)

LOVED THIS BOOK!!
Format: Kindle
*NO SPOILERS PART OF MY REVIEW* I was eagerly anticipating this book ever since I learned it was coming out! I watched so many TikToks about this series and it made me feel so validated in my obsession for the Off Campus series and the OC couples. Therefore, I could not wait to read The Legacy as soon as it came out. I refreshed my Kindle app and there it was! I read all night, and slept for maybe 1 hour but I finished the book within 12 hours of it being released. I was SO pleased. This book was fabulous. Though it is 4 novellas (one for each couple) Elle Kennedy did an amazing job of weaving the four stories together and making it seamless. I really appreciated the continuity throughout the whole book. Seeing the group's dynamic was a total highlight of this book. I absolutely loved that we got to see their messages in the group chat and see how their friendships have stood the test of time and distance after their college days are over. I LOVED seeing the mentions of other characters in the Briar U/ Off-Campus universe as well. It reminded me of why I love this series so much. One thing, not a real spoiler but the epilogue is only about one couple, not all 4 like I had hoped and expected. I really hope we see more from the Off-Campus/Briar U universe in the future. If you love this series, you will really enjoy this book. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND READING THE WHOLE SERIES. IN ORDER. INCLUDING THIS AMAZING BOOK. ****CAUTION SPOILERS AHEAD**** I appreciated that Elle Kennedy added more to Grace and Logan's story given that a version of it was already published 2 years ago (?). I really liked their story. At first I was a little annoyed that it ended on sort of a cliff hanger, but once I read the whole book, it made sense because other novellas in this book ended the same way. Allie and Dean are my favorite couple in the Off-Campus series, followed by Hannah and Garrett. Allie and Dean's story in this book was great. I really loved getting to see them together again. The main conflict/ problem in their story was surprising to me. Allie's hesitation about engagement, wedding, babies, seemed a little bit uncharacteristic of her. She is SUCH a hopeless romantic, that seeing her be apprehensive about all of those things was confusing for me as a reader and a fan. But overall, I really enjoyed seeing Dean and Allie again. I love Dean so much. He is such an innately good person and so is Allie. I'm sad that there was no "glimpse into the future" for A&D in the epilogue because I would have LOVED to see them start a little family and maybe name their son Beau since Beau Maxwell was such a big part of their story. Sabrina and Tucker's story was also great. I appreciated that the author gave them a conflict in this book that in my opinion was never really resolved/addressed in The Goal. Their communication skills as a couple was beyond bad and frustrating! Tucker's admission to Sabrina that he is unhappy in his job coming as a surprise to Sabrina was bizarre. I enjoyed seeing them as parents to a toddler, so cute! Finally, Hannah and Garrett. The original Off-Campus couple. The people that started it all. I appreciated the premise of their novella, but bringing Garrett's abusive father back into the storyline, but only in a novella was unfair. There is SO SO SO much to say and unpack with regards to that. Shoehorning it into a brief novella was frustrating as a reader because it felt like that needed to be a whole full-length book itself. And Hannah holding off on telling Garrett about the pregnancy was also strange and unlike them. Garrett switching his opinion so quickly about being a dad was way too rushed. I feel like they were a couple who was pretty good at communication so seeing how Hannah handled this situation in this book was surprising. I would have really loved to see Garrett acknowledging that he has a lot of childhood trauma to work through and process in therapy! That would have been some real character development for him. Also, the lack of a wedding for them was upsetting because I feel like they deserve that and as a reader, I would have loved to see thatI!! Lastly, The epilogue was also a bit of a let down as I expected it to be a flash forward for all 4 couples, but it was just for Hannah and Garrett and it wasn't really a flash forward at all. *END OF SPOILERS* READ THIS BOOK!!! THANK YOU ELLE KENNEDY!!!!
