The Jocassee Gorges are some of the most remote, rugged, wild and scenic areas in the Southeast US, much less northwestern South Carolina. The Gorges were once the capital of the Lower Cherokee Indians and by the late 1700Õs, were a central hub for many trade routes with the Atlantic Ocean and European traders. In 1998, the state of South Carolina purchased most of the property and created one of the largest protected Wildlife Management areas in the Southeast, a total area of 250 square miles! Now there are 32 bouldering areas and around 1,500 routes documented within the Jocassee Gorges, representing 20+ years of development!
