After graduating a year early from high school, he took a number of jobs to support his family and then served in the US army, experiencing the US mainland and its cities and culture from the perspective of a Hawaii boy. He attended medical school on the GI bill and undertook his hospital training in Indiana and Kentucky, before returning to Hawaii in 1959, the year of statehood, to set up his practice. My Life in Medicine contains personal observations and anecdotes from his life as a medical student, resident and practicing surgeon, and reflects on the changes in the medical profession from the 1940Õs and 50Õs until his retirement in 1989.
