A vivid account of the generations-long dispute over Bayes' rule, one of the greatest breakthroughs in the history of applied mathematics and statistics

"An intellectual romp touching on, among other topics, military ingenuity, the origins of modern epidemiology, and the theological foundation of modern mathematics."--Michael Washburn, Boston Globe

A New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice

Bayes' rule appears to be a straightforward, one-line theorem: by updating our initial beliefs with objective new information, we get a new and improved belief. To its adherents, it is an elegant statement about learning from experience. To its opponents, it is subjectivity run amok.

In the first-ever account of Bayes' rule for general readers, Sharon Bertsch McGrayne explores this controversial theorem and the human obsessions surrounding it. She traces its discovery by an amateur mathematician in the 1740s through its development into roughly its modern form by French scientist Pierre Simon Laplace. She reveals why respected statisticians rendered it professionally taboo for 150 years--at the same time that practitioners relied on it to solve crises involving great uncertainty and scanty information (Alan Turing's role in breaking Germany's Enigma code during World War II), and explains how the advent of off-the-shelf computer technology in the 1980s proved to be a game-changer. Today, Bayes' rule is used everywhere from DNA de-coding to Homeland Security.

Drawing on primary source material and interviews with statisticians and other scientists, The Theory That Would Not Die is the riveting account of how a seemingly simple theorem ignited one of the greatest controversies of all time.

Nice Finish, Decent Fit
Size: 2002-2005 E46
The fitment isn't perfect like the OEM grilles, but overall I was satisfied. These are just slightly smaller than the originals so there is a little play once installed. No need to modify the LH side grille for clearance to the hood latch though as other reviews mention. It looks like the design has been revised to address that problem. I was impressed with the paint finish and there weren't any noticeable blemishes like dust or dirt in the paint. These are probably the best and cheapest gloss black kidney grilles for E46 that are currently available. OEM grilles w/ gloss black are basically discontinued so we're all stuck with aftermarket if you want the gloss black shadowline look.

loose fitment
Size: 2002-2005 E46
I guess it's a hit or miss with this. You either get perfect fitment or poor fitment like I did, after the install it's very loose.

Awful fitment, poor quality
Size: 2002-2005 E46
Although not oem quality was expected, but I never thought to throw them away either. Grills look very nice, outside quality is good. Unfortunately the grills do not fit to its place and slip just after you close the hood. After several tries to make them stay in place I have broken 2 clamps. Finally I have removed these grills and went on with OEM ones. Also, pay attention that you must drill a space for hood lock on the inner side (driver side grill does not have the factory space for hood lock handle).

Cheap but works
Size: 2002-2005 E46
Why did you pick this product vs others?: These are cheap, but work. They don’t snap in well and don’t fit the edges perfectly. That being said, they’re cheap and fill the hole if your grill is broken or missing.
