Rodrigo Diaz, the legendary warrior-knight of eleventh-century Castile known as El Cid, is remembered today as the Christian hero of the Spanish crusade who waged wars of re-conquest for the triumph of the Cross over the Crescent. He is still honored in Spain as a national hero for liberating the fatherland from the occupying Moors. Yet, as Richard Fletcher shows in this award-winning book, there are many contradictions between eleventh-century reality and the mythology that developed with the passing years.By placing El Cid in a fresh, historical context, Fletcher shows us an adventurous soldier of fortune who was of a type, one of a number of "cids," or "bosses," who flourished in eleventh-century Spain. But the El Cid of legend--the national hero--was unique in stature even in his lifetime. Before his death El Cid was already celebrated in a poem written in tribute of the conquest of Almeria; posthumously he was immortalized in the great epic Poema de Mio Cid and became the centerpiece for countless other works of literature. When he died in Valencia in 1099, he was ruler of an independent principality he had carved for himself in Eastern Spain. Rather than the zealous Christian leader many believe him to have been, Rodrigo emerges in Fletcher's study as a mercenary equally at home in the feudal kingdoms of northern Spain and the exotic Moorish lands of the south, selling his martial skills to Christian and Muslim alike. Indeed, his very title derives from the Arabic word sayyid meaning "lord" or "master." And as there was little if any sense of Spanish nationhood in the eleventh century, he can hardly be credited for uniting a medieval Spanish nation.
In this ground-breaking inquiry into the life and times of El Cid, Fletcher disentangles fact from myth to create a striking portrait of an extraordinary man, clearly showing how and why legend transformed him into something he was not during his life. A fascinating journey through a turbulent epoch, The Quest for El Cid is filled with the excitement of discovery, and will delight readers interested not only in Spanish history and literature, but those who want to understand how myth can shape our perception of history.

Pup loves this!
Color: Blue Puppy, Size: Medium Size 2
My pup loves his soccer balls. These are very durable although if you have a dog that doesn't grasp the concept of using the loops/straps to carry it, teeth could puncture it. They are a good value for the money if your dog likes to chase the ball, I get the smaller size ball for my dog (medium dog). They come with a pump but if you have a bicycle pump or a battery operated pump, it will fill much faster. Ours stay outside and even in the winter, they hold up well, just need a bit more air occasionally to keep it pumped up.

Well that didn't last long!
Color: Blue Puppy, Size: Medium Size 2
He loved it for the 15 minutes it took to destroy it! Cute design, but the material was thin enough to penetrate with his teeth and it was all over in a very short time! He still carries the carcass around and tries to play with it...it's sad. Definitely not for strong chewers.

Decent ball
Color: Blue Puppy, Size: Medium Size 2
Context: I have a busy, anxious Corgi.
I like that it came with a pump to air it up.
My dog likes the tag feature on it which made the ball easy to carry. She chewed off the tags pretty quick.
She didn’t like herding this one as much. She prefers herding a basketball over this ball.
The ball sits in the backyard through all the weather and elements and has held up pretty well. We’ve had it about a year and it’s still a good toy.

Easily Ripped apart within minutes
Color: Blue Puppy, Size: Medium Size 2, Color: Blue Puppy, Size: Medium Size 2
I have a new foster who’s only 35 pounds not an aggressive chewer and loves to play with my dogs rooster soccer ball toy but the ball itself is a little big for her to get her teeny little mouth around when she’s trying to carry and run with it this happened to pop up on my feed a size smaller (medium, instead of large ) and available for next day delivery, so I bought it specifically for the little dog to play with. I gave it to her to play outside while my hound is busy playing with one of her toys I went about watering the garden, when I turned around a few minutes later, I saw the ball appeared to be completely flattened. As I walked over, I saw pieces of black rubber on the ground, and then the rest of the ball had a gaping hole in it. The rooster version of the ball that I bought from another seller has been going strong for months with multiple dogs playing with it and chewing on it and ripping the side ribbons apart so either I got a defective toy or the quality of manufacturer from this seller is much lower since the durability of the ball seems to be less than an hour.
