Universal Genève Compax Ref. 22458 – The Salmon-Dialed Steel Treasure of the 1940s–50s

Among the many jewels produced during Universal Genève’s golden age, few creations capture the brand’s artistry and mid-century charm like the Compax Ref. 22458. This example—cased in stainless steel, adorned with a factory-original salmon dial, and fitted with delightful fancy lugs—stands at the pinnacle of UG’s collectible chronographs.
A watch that is already rare in theory becomes almost mythical in reality: a salmon dial in steel. For connoisseurs, this combination is the holy grail of Universal Genève aesthetics.

A Steel Case with Sculptural Fancy Lugs

While many UG chronographs of the period were produced in gold, this one is crafted in stainless steel, enhancing both its rarity and its desirability today. The case remains sharp, crisp, and unpolished, preserving the original metal geometry and the dramatic curves of its fancy lugs—a hallmark of 1940s–50s design and a signature feature that makes this reference instantly recognizable.

The architecture of the case creates a subtle interplay of light across its angles, giving the watch a presence that is both elegant and quietly powerful.

The Dial – A True Salmon, Factory Original & Radiant

The showstopper is, without question, the factory-original salmon dial—a glorious pink-toned metallic finish that Universal Genève executed with unmatched finesse.
Its surface glows softly, shifting from warm rose to pale champagne depending on the light.

Finding a genuine salmon dial from this era is already difficult. Finding one in original condition, with blue steel hands, and cased in steel? That borders on the impossible.

The layout is classic UG Compax:

  • Two-register chronograph

  • 45-minute counter at 3 o’clock

  • Small seconds at 9 o’clock

  • Perfectly balanced typography and scales

This is the kind of dial that collectors dream about—honest, charismatic, and untouched.

Movement – The Legendary Universal Genève Calibre 285

Inside beats one of UG’s most respected engines: the Calibre 285, a manually wound chronograph movement from the era when Universal Genève was considered one of the finest chronograph makers in the world.

Recently fully serviced by a professional watchmaker, the movement now runs beautifully, with crisp chronograph action and reliable amplitude.
This Compax is not just a historical artifact; it is a mechanically sound instrument ready for decades of continued enjoyment.

A Survivor of Its Era – Rare, Original, and Collectible

This watch checks every box for serious UG collectors:

  • Steel case

  • Fancy lugs

  • Original salmon dial

  • Unpolished condition

  • Blue steel hands

  • Cal. 285 freshly serviced

  • Mid-century production (1940s–50s)

In this configuration and condition, it is more than rare—it is borderline irreplaceable.

As collectors like to say:
“Find me another one.”

Fantastic adapter for international travel
Style: Type C/G/A-Most Countries-3FT
This adapter worked as intended when needing to charge devices in Europe. The adapter was easy to attach to the plug and the cord length came in handy for sockets that were in hard to reach locations. The only thing is it does take up some space in luggage, so make sure to account for that. Would definitely recommend for international travel.

Stunning Automatic Watch With TopTier Durability and Precision
Color: Grey
“I got this Tissot PRX for my cousin’s birthday and bro fell in LOVE instantly. This thing keeps time like a beast, never slows down, never lags. Automatic movement, so no batteries, no drama. Durability? Stupid good. You can hit it, bump it, live life rough, it still looks box fresh. Size wise it was almost perfect. I just had to remove two links, nothing big. It’s light, functional, comfortable, doesn’t weigh you down, doesn’t get in the way but more importantly I can say this watch is in everyone’s eyesight when we wear it. Cause of course I had to get another one! Basically. I gave him a very nice piece as a gift, and now he’s walking around like he owns Switzerland.

Excellent value for an automatic watch, keeps VERY good time.
Color: Grey, Color: Grey
I've only had the watch for a day but wanted to leave a quick review on it to share a couple of notes. So far it keeps VERY good time, better than any of the automatics I own (including a Rolex Submariner, Tag Heuer Aquaracer, Tag Heuer Formula One, and several other sub $1k watches). I set it to an atomic time app on my phone yesterday and 24 hours later it's still SPOT on - hasn't gained/lost even a 1/10 of a second. I was shocked to see it's kept PERFECT time for the last day, I'm really blown away so far. I've worn it the entire time, we'll see how well it keeps time while being stored in a winder. This picture shown is the watch with a 22mm leather band on it, fit's without any issues (just need to squeeze in the leather a tad). I doubt it would work with a 22mm metal bracelet, but leather works great. Just FYI since the 21mm lug width is kind of odd. The face isn't quite a lustrious as the images make it look, but it's still a great-looking watch. For a sub $1000 automatic you can't go wrong, this is a fantastic watch at a great price. It'll be my daily driver for some time I'm sure. If I have any issues in the future I'll update the review.

Really cool and beautiful watch. Although my specific unit runs 5 seconds fast every day—at first it’s annoying, but eventually you stop caring. 🤣
