The Shruti Box is a hand-pumped reed instrument used to provide droning chords and notes in classical Indian music. It is often used as an accompaniment for the voice or a lead instrument, like the flute. The fixed, droning nature of the Shruti Box is perfect for tuning the voice or for exploring the notes in a given key scale.
The exterior is made of wood, with cloth bellows and reeds allowing the sound to be pumped through the chambers of the box. It is similar to the harmonium in its overall sound and uses.
The Shruti Boxes we carry have chromatic tuning according to the A=432 Hz standard. Compared to the 440 Hz tuning standard, the 432 Hz tuning standard is believed by many to be closer to the natural rhythms and proportions of nature, as outlined by Pythagoras.
Our boxes have 13-keys: one full octave of tones and half-tones. These portable Harmoniums are the perfect addition for sound healers and therapists, or for creators of new age and world music.
