Consisting of about 25,000 verses in Valmiki's R_m_ya_a, the story of R_ma was summarized in 704 verses in eighteen chapters in the R_mop_khy_na, which comprises chapters 258--275 of the Aranyaka Parvan of the great epic Mah_bh_rata. The story is introduced in chapter 257 and given an afterword in chapter 276 which bring the number of verses in this book to 728. The present independent-study edition of the R_mop_khy_na is suitable for students who have completed an introductory Sanskrit course to continue reading Sanskrit on their own, but it may also be used in a second-year Sanskrit course, or by beginning Sanskrit students. The edition brings all the information required for a complete comprehension of every detail of the text together in one or two pages for each verse. For each verse it provides the Devanagari text, Roman transliteration, analysis of sandhi, identification of inflection, glossary, Sanskrit prose paraphrases, syntactic and cultural notes, and an English translation. The glossary includes the stem or verbal root of each word occurring in the verse, its lexical categorization and translation, analysis of compounds, and derivation. This publication is a revision of the first edition of the R_mop_khy_na published by Routledge/Curzon in 2003. The revised edition appears in a Roman version as well as this Devanagari version. The Roman version has sandhi analysis, glossary and notes, as well as Sanskrit appendices, in Romanized Sanskrit as in the first edition. This Devanagari version has all citations of Sanskrit in Devanagari script but still provides a standard Romanization of each verse in addition.

Volume 1 consists of an introduction in two parts and appendices. The first part discusses the story of R_ma, and the context of the R_mop_khy_na in the Mah_bh_rata. The second part discusses the structure of my commentary on each verse in detail. The appendices provide aids to understanding and exploring the text and the story further.

Volume 2 contains the 18 chapters of the R_mop_khy_na proper and its introduction and concluding chapters in the Mah_bh_rata with my detailed commentary on each verse.

Interesting
Format: Kindle
Can't say I agree with the author's analysis, but it is interesting to read something that is not laced with political correctness. This seems an honest assessment of how things are. I recommend it.

An unputdownable reading on all matters strategic!
Format: Kindle
Hew Stratchan has used a clear and lucid narrative style to throw light upon the otherwise drab subject of strategy, drawing upon his talent as an historian, contemporising it in the current global environment, and has presented a practical guide to understanding strategic theory and putting it in practice.

Format: Kindle
I think we need to get to know who our new leaders are going to be. This is one of the books on "Mad Dog"'s reading list. So far it has been very compelling and interesting. Having lived during the Colin Powell years and Bush years as a young impressionable youth to now see what was really going on and the thought behind it.

A good supplement to Clausewitz
Format: Paperback
This book is an excellent supplement to Clausewitz or Jomni or anything like that. It puts the parameters of strategy in the context of recent history. I liked that angle about it. You will get a new perspective on strategic thought through that for sure. I can't think of anything that does that for a reader. The nature of the material really would go over with readers who have a history on the topic and who work in the field. The downside to me is how the book supplements other material. It has awesome chapters on various aspects of strategy like technology. I liked the criticism of US policy in the Middle East. The author has some great points. However, the book needs a connecting thread among these chapters. It never clearly defines strategy and why it could or does for a nation. If you are in some staff college studying strategy, this book is your ticket to an A grade.
