As the sun sinks into the horizon, a lone fisherman sails across the vast expanse of water, his silhouette drifting between the mirrored elements of ocean and sky. The golden hues of dusk cast their final glow over Bali’s northeastern coast, where the towering form of Gunung Agung rises in quiet majesty, flanked by the distant peaks of Gunung Abang and Gunung Batur, their contours softened by the evening haze.

Far from the restless energy of the island’s southern shores, this secluded region unfolds like a forgotten tale—a rugged 10-kilometer stretch cradled between the mountains and the sea. Traditional villages line the coastline, with Amed standing as one of the most renowned. Once among the poorest areas of Bali, its volcanic terrain made farming difficult, leaving its people to rely on the ocean’s gifts. Fishing and salt-making have long been their lifeblood, though in recent years, tourism has woven itself into the fabric of daily life. Yet, despite modern shifts, the essence of Amed remains unchanged—rooted in its people’s intimate dance with nature.
