The Mogami-class was a technically innovative design that pushed the limits of the Washington Treaty system by fitting ten gun turrets on a hull officially classed as a light cruiser. This earlier configuration represents the ship as she appeared at the Battle of Midway in 1942, where Mogami suffered severe damage from a collision and US air attacks.
