Spiritual Christianity arose from a series of blog posts I wrote to prepare my then seven-year-old daughter for baptism. I wanted her to start out with a faith that was:

* Resilient to disappointments
* Relevant to culture
* Revolutionary to society
* Reviving to the church

I realized I had to discard the religious terminology we have been using to describe Christianity for the last few centuries, and come up with simple metaphors that made sense within her everyday experience. To establish a connection between her and God, I defined ÒspiritÓ as the part of us that can reflect on our thoughts, feelings, and desires.

To my delight, this perspective provided an elegant way of addressing traditional topics like sin and redemption. The discipline of writing for a child also forced me to explain the gospel in a way that might just make sense to a world where terms like ÒsalvationÓ and ÒlordshipÓ have largely lost their meaning -- even inside the church!

God alone knows when and how those seeds I planted may bear fruit in her life. But they have already proved encouraging and illuminating for me. I pray that would do the same for you.
