A guide for individuals and organizations navigating the complex and ambiguous Future of Work

Foreword by New York Times columnist and best-selling author Thomas L. Friedman

Technology is changing work as we know it. Cultural norms are undergoing tectonic shifts. A global pandemic proves that we are inextricably connected whether we choose to be or not. So much change, so quickly, is disorienting. It's undermining our sense of identity and challenging our ability to adapt. But where so many see these changes as threatening, Heather McGowan and Chris Shipley see the opportunity to open the flood gates of human potential--if we can change the way we think about work and leadership. They have dedicated the last 5 years to understanding how technical, business, and cultural shifts affecting the workplace have brought us to this crossroads, The result is a powerful and practical guide to the future of work for leaders and employees. The future can be better, but only if we let go of our attachment to our traditional (and disappearing) ideas about careers, and what a "good job" looks like.

Blending wisdom from interviews with hundreds of executives, The Adaptation Advantage explains the profound changes happening in the world of work and posits the solution: new ways to think about careers that detach our sense of pride and personal identity from our job title, and connect it to our sense of purpose. Activating purpose, the authors suggest, will inherently motivate learning, engagement, empowerment, and lead to new forms of pride and identity throughout the workforce. Only when we let go of our rigid career identities can we embrace and appreciate the joys of learning and adapting to new realities--and help our organizations do the same.

Of course, making this transition is hard. It requires leaders who can attract and motivate cognitively diverse teams fueled by a strong sense of purpose in an environment of psychological safety--despite fierce competition and external pressures. Adapting to the future of work has always called for strong leadership. Now, as a pandemic disrupts so many aspects of work, adapting is a leadership imperative. The Adaptation Advantage is an essential guide to help leaders meet that challenge.

One of the softest things I own
Size: One Size, Color: Black
This Cashmere hat is the softest hat I have ever worn. It is not thick, and it is super stretchy, so fit really is one size fits most. It is incredibly warm. I love natural fibers, as they feel so much better on your skin, and they just work better (I live in a cold climate). This hat has a tiny bottle of nylon/elastsne to make it hold up better and fit better, but it's mostly Cashmere (94%). The wash instructions are simple: hand wash in cold water, roll in a towel, amd block/reshape. Amazon always likes me to comment on value for price on these reviews, and to be honest $98 (the price it was selling for when I ordered it) is rather steep. That is the only reason I didn't give that 5th star. I feel like this hat will last for a decade or more (if one of my kids doesn't steal it), so looking at it that way, the price seems more reasonable, but it is still a lot for a hat. Otherwise, I am absolutely in love with it. It's a little luxury in my winter wardrobe.

Delightful cashmere beanie
Size: One Size, Color: Heather Charcoal, Size: One Size, Color: Heather Charcoal
I love this beanie—I have been living in it since it arrived. The yarn is thicker than most of my other cashmere hats (I have several), and very soft. It is a little big on a smaller adult head (I roll it up, which also looks cute), so this hat should fit a wide range of heads. At time of review, this cashmere beanie from Everlane was listed at ninety-eight dollars. That's on the high side when compared to similar brands like Quince, but this is a well made hat and good quality cashmere. It would make an impressive gift.

Soft, Warm, and Perfect for Winter Weather
Size: One Size, Color: Black, Size: One Size, Color: Black
This beanie is incredibly soft and feels luxurious the moment you put it on. The cashmere has that smooth, cozy texture that makes it comfortable to wear all day without any itchiness. It provides just the right amount of warmth, keeping my head and ears protected during the cold winter months where I live. The ribbed design gives it a clean, classic look that works with just about any outfit, whether I’m running errands or heading out for a walk in the cold. It feels lightweight but still insulating, which makes it easy to wear without feeling bulky. Overall, it’s a simple, high-quality piece that delivers on both comfort and warmth.

Soft, warm, and comfortable
Size: One Size, Color: Black, Size: One Size, Color: Black
So so soft, this beanie is great. The knitting is this hat is great and well made. It has gotten cold and this keeps my head and ears nice and warm. A super comfortable, can wear all day without worry of it squeezing or causing pressure points. The value is great, cashmere is usually expensive. This beanie may be inexpensive but it is not cheaply made.

Super soft and plush beanie
Size: One Size, Color: Black, Size: One Size, Color: Black
This is a soft, plush, warm and comfortable knit beanie. I generally wear my hair in box braids and having a beanie that is both stretchy enough to fit without becoming too stretched out is important. This beanie does that perfectly. It also is soft enough that it doesn't make my hair feel dry or look super frizzy.
