Hence, all works of this character deal largely with the same subject matter. However, the arrangement of this material and the treatment given various aspects of the subject allow for variety and freshness in its presentation. No effort has been made to make this work unique or largely original. Many of the facts and arguments herein presented have been stated by others. Great truths change not; but the application of these truths to certain problems may change as the problems themselves change or as new problems arise. The special emphasis placed upon some truths and the special treatment of certain problems help give to this work whatever of uniqueness it may be found to possess.

These studies are not intended to be an exhaustive treatment of systematic theology. Although some subjects are discussed more fully than others, the reader should not expect to find herein a complete discussion of any great truth. The subjects which are deemed more important for the present age have received the fuller treatment. The purpose of this work is to give a comprehensive view of the important doctrines of Christianity arranged for study. It is intended primarily for theological students and ministers, but it will prove helpful to all who desire to broaden their knowledge of the doctrines of Christianity.

This work is written from the viewpoint of orthodox, evangelical Christianity. It speaks with definiteness and conviction on the truths that are established with certainty. It is less dogmatic on subjects concerning which there are reasons for diversity of opinion. Without doubt it is colored with the personal views of the author, although he has endeavored to reflect faithfully the truths held in general by his brethren and associates in the ministry. It is not, however, a mere impersonal statement of accepted views; it springs from the deep convictions of the writer, who hopes that like convictions may be produced in the hearts of the readers.

Acknowledgment is due the many sources that have influenced this work. Chief among these is that excellent work by Russell R. Byrum, Christian Theology, the influence of which appears in many places.

This work has been prepared with a sense of great responsibility and a consciousness of inadequacy for the task. The assistance of the Holy Spirit has been sought constantly—it is hoped not in vain.

With a sincere prayer that this work will prove of value to many seekers after truth, it is now committed to the public.
