Wilderness First Responder Recertification

Participants will practice, review and update wilderness first responder and CPR skills required to work and respond to emergencies in remote or wilderness settings, and to provide urgent evacuation and, at times, extended care until organized health care can be accessed. Participants will practice advanced leadership and rescue decision-making skills. A significant part of the recertification course is taught in a hands-on, outdoor setting and requires greater physical activity than typical first aid training.

This WFR recertification course is suitable for those who have already taken the full 8 day WFR course, and want to renew their certification before the certification expiry date.

Course Materials

The program is supported with the Red Cross new Professional Responder text, workbook, BLS field guide and a Wilderness Field Guide which is on waterproof paper. Also, a handout booklet with supplemental reading and case studies is used to enhance group specific needs. Wilderness first aid and First Response kits will be provided for simulations.

Duration

40 hours, over 4 days, May 1, 6, 7 & 8th, 2026. The program is a mix of classroom and experiential sessions and simulations/scenarios. Most evenings you will be expected to complete readings, case study and exercises. An evening will be devoted to an overnight scenario which will involve a short out-trip. Expect continual emergency and rescue simulations with mocked-up victims and stage blood.

Prerequisites

  • Current WFR (for recert option)
  • Participants must be at least 16 years of age and in good health and physical condition.
  • You will also be required to bring proper clothing for the location and time of year as 50 % or more of the program is outdoors regardless of weather. Our goal is to emulate as much as possible the learner’s “wilderness reality”. We find the more you can place the student in their environment the more effective the learning. Before the course begins you will receive a suggested list of what to bring. The idea is to use and test what you would be using in your WFR environment.

Airedale tough!
Color: Rubber Chew Toy, Size: Large
We have two young Airedale Terriers and I thought this would be a good inside toy for them to tug. And I was right! Very happily so. I have to admit I was surprised when I first saw it; it seemed so small. But the thing stretches and springs back to shape. We’ve had it about 2 weeks now and it is constantly played with. Absolutely the best toy! Very interactive either alone (it rolls) or with us or they play together. I am surprised how tough it is with all the constant rough play. Highly recommend!!!

Small, but twisty and fun looking. Seems relatively sturdy, though doesn't look indestructible at all.
Color: Rubber Chew Toy, Size: Large
SLIGHTLY disappointed because I thought this was bigger than it is. If you squish it all in close, it's maybe one and a half times the size of a tennis ball. (Of course, the size is probably listed; I think I just assumed, so my fault.) That being said, it's entertainingly twisty and squishy, though the rubber seems relatively sturdy. I'm not yet positive if it will hold up to the 8 month retriever/lab mix it's intended for; he tends to rip instantly through anything much less sturdy than kong natural rubber. But it seems like something that will amuse him, so we're going to give it a shot at Christmas.

Great product!
Color: Rubber Chew Toy, Size: Large
My dog is an aggressive chewer. I have bought this 3 times for her she loves to play tug and fetch with it. They last longer than most of the other toys I get her and it’s one of her favorites.

It’s okay I guess
Color: Rubber Chew Toy, Size: Large
Good price and decent toy, seems well made. My puppy is entirely uninterested and doesn’t play with it at all.
