These two styles led to the American Empire style represented by designs of Duncan Phyfe and Charles-Honore Lannuier. Industrialization and population explosion led to growth of modern furniture industry in Victorian England. Earlier styles--Renaissance, Gothic, rococo--were revived at the demand of the urban middle class. Similarly, in the United States, John Henry Bolter's rococo furniture became de rigour for merchants and professionals. Other trends followed: Arts and Crafts movement, Art Deco, International. Includes a chapter on collecting, glossary of special terms, 31 colorplates, and 98 black-and-white photographs.
