SHORTLISTED FOR THE BOOKSELLER CHILDREN'S NON-FICTION BOOK OF THE YEAR 2024

A story of survival, of love between mother and son and of enduring hope in the face of unspeakable hardship. An important read.

The Boy Who Didn't Want to Die describes an extraordinary journey, made by Peter, a boy of five, through war-torn Europe in 1944 and 1945.

Peter and his parents set out from a small Hungarian town, travelling through Austria and then Germany together.

Along the way, unforgettable images of adventure flash one after another: sleeping in a tent and then under the sky, discovering a disused brick factory, catching butterflies in the meadows - and as Peter realises that this adventure is really a nightmare - watching bombs falling from the blue sky outside Vienna, learning maths from his mother in Belsen.

All this is drawn against a background of terror, starvation, infection and, inevitably, death, before Peter and his mother can return home.

  • Author Professor Peter Lantos is a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and in his previous life was an internationally renowned clinical neuroscientist. His memoir, Parallel Lines (Arcadia Books, 2006) was translated into Hungarian, German and Italian. Closed Horizon (Arcadia, 2012) was his first novel.
  • Peter was awarded the British Empire Medal in 2020 for 'services to Holocaust education and awareness'
  • He is one of the last of the generation of survivors and this - his first book for children - will serve as a testimony to his experience.
  • Peter lives in London.

"the book [is] absolutely compelling, partly because it is a true story of extraordinary resilience and survival in unimaginable circumstances, but also because Lantos' stark recollections make very powerful reading." Gaby Wine, The Jewish Chronicle

Beautiful
Color: Best Dad-brown
I got this for my husband for Father’s Day and I know he’s going to love it! It’s very simple with a beautiful colored leather, great stitch/leather quality, a hearty quote with a cute design, and perfect size for what is usually kept at the bedside.

Good looking and the wireless charging works great
Color: Best Dad-brown
I have a confession to make, I(a dad) bought this for myself. I was looking for something to keep on the night stand next tot he bed without getting to big. I only wanted something to charge my phone and put the tv remotes in, I have no interest in keeping my keys, watch or spare change in reach of our younger children....most of the other options I found were much bigger for all those purposes. This one is well made, looks great, and the wireless charger is very easy with my iphone, even while in its case. I dont even need to center it in the charging pad, which was my only fear. I can lay my phone anywhere in there and it charges flawlessly. If you are looking for a gift for your dad, I would not hesitate.

Charger works great, tray is solid
Color: Best Dad-brown, Color: Best Dad-brown
I've only used wireless chargers in passing before, and always had issues with them consistently 'activating.' I've had no issues with this one at all, the tray makes it very easy to line it up. Slide the phone all the way into the groove and it's charged flawlessly for me. My phone does have a case, though it's not a very thick one like an otterbox, which I imagine would make the charging more inconsistent. The tray as a whole is very solidly built and well made, it is listed as 'vegan leather' so I'm assuming it's not actual leather, but you honestly can't tell the difference. My biggest complaint is how cheesy the saying on the tray is (even though I am a dad), but that is well worth putting up with for how nice the tray is.

Not bad, but charger didn't work with my phone
Color: Best Dad-brown
I have several organizing trays on my desk (basic, nothing as nice as this box), and so I thought to reduce the clutter on my desk further by incorporating my QI charger with an organizer tray. Unfortunately the QI charger in the organizer wouldn't link up to the QI charging coils of my phone. Whereas the organizer's charger did work with my wife's S24 Ultra, and my phone has been working on a separate QI charger. The whole point in spending this much money on this organizer is for the QI charger. Without the charger working it's just too expensive as an organizer. Yes, it has a leather look to it, but even with that finish I'd say $25 max would be all I'd be willing to pay for such an organizer. So this a cautionary point. If you give this as a gift it may not work with the recipients phone.

Great organizer for nightstand
Color: Black
This made a great gift for my unorganized husband, able to keep all the things he has strewn about in one place. Feels like high quality for a decent price.
