Solid captures a rare side of Grant Green, recorded in 1964 but shelved until its release on Blue Note in 1979. The session features an all-star lineup: McCoy Tyner on piano, Elvin Jones on drums, Bob Cranshaw on bass, and the horn pairing of James Spaulding and Joe Henderson. Together, they push Green into more complex and adventurous hard bop territory than his typically groove-oriented sessions.

The set’s material leans toward modal and harmonically challenging compositions, allowing each player to stretch beyond their comfort zone. Tyner and Jones bring the fire of the Coltrane Quartet, while Henderson and Spaulding’s front-line interplay sharpens the music’s edge. Through it all, Green’s guitar tone remains lyrical and fluid, balancing precision with soul.

Long considered a unique entry in Green’s catalog, Solid stands out for its intensity and focus. AllMusic called it “a bright, hard-charging affair” and “one of Green’s strongest jazz outings.” Though recorded in the prime of his career, the album’s delayed release only added to its mystique, revealing an overlooked chapter of one of Blue Note’s most distinctive guitar voices.
