Big Generator is the twelfth studio album by Yes, released on September 28, 1987, through Atco Records. Following the massive success of 90125, the album found the band continuing its evolution from progressive rock pioneers to polished arena-pop innovators. Produced by Trevor Rabin, Paul DeVilliers, and Trevor Horn, the sessions were long and turbulent, taking the band from Italy to London and finally Los Angeles. The resulting record is sleek, high-tech, and bold in scope, reflecting both the creative tensions and the sonic ambition that defined Yes in the 1980s.
Musically, Big Generator pushes further into the fusion of rock precision and electronic sheen that had powered 90125. Singles such as “Love Will Find a Way” and “Rhythm of Love” embraced the era’s glossy production and radio-friendly hooks, while deeper cuts like “Shoot High Aim Low” and the title track retained flashes of the band’s progressive complexity. The closing song, “Holy Lamb (Song for Harmonic Convergence),” written by Jon Anderson, offered a reflective counterpoint steeped in the spiritual imagery that had long shaped his lyrics.
Though met with mixed critical reception, Big Generator achieved strong commercial success, reaching number 15 on the Billboard 200 and earning platinum certification in the United States. The album’s tour extended through 1988, after which Anderson departed the band to form Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe.
