This map of the town of Knysna, located on the Garden Route of South Africa’s southern coast, is a modern and detailed map that focuses on the town and its adjacent neighbourhoods and iconic landmarks. These include the Knysna Estuary with the Knysna CBD on its northern shore, its two residential islands, Thesen Island and Leisure Isle and the distinctive channel to the ocean through the Knysna Heads. Along the coast the town of Buffels Bay straddles Walker Point in the west. The satellite towns of Brenton-on-Sea, Lake Brenton and Belvidere are also included. All road infrastructure is shown, as well as the now defunct railway line to George.

Map Design and Paper

The map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art. Data for this map has been compiled from various up-to-date sources including from the OpenStreetMap contributors. The map is available in two paper options and canvas: a high quality 210gsm heavyweight coated paper with a matte finish, which achieves excellent colour and resolution and is perfect for framing;  a 260gsm photo paper with a smooth satin finish;  and a 350gsm strengthened canvas. All of the options are shipped in a cardboard roll for protection. The canvas is unstretched and unframed.

History

Knysna's history is deeply connected to its beautiful estuary and the surrounding indigenous forests. The town was officially established in the early 19th century and became an important timber port, with wood from the forests being shipped to all parts of the British Empire. The Knysna Heads, two towering sandstone cliffs that guard the entrance to the estuary, made navigation challenging but also provided a naturally sheltered harbour. The town's economy later diversified to include a thriving oyster industry. Today, Knysna is a major Garden Route destination, celebrated for its scenic beauty, the annual Oyster Festival, and its role as a hub for eco-tourism and outdoor activities.
