Treats can be beneficial during training: They are excellent tools for keeping your pet focused on you and the learning experience, regardless of their age. For training, treats should be small and easily chewed, allowing for quick rewards for good behavior. Ideal training treats are soft and about the size of a pea. Pets care less about the size of the treat and more about the quantity. Larger treats can be more suitable for rewarding good behavior, as they require your pet to stop, chew, and take their time enjoying them.

Using dog treats effectively: The best way to utilize treats is to reinforce a calm and submissive demeanor. Avoid using treats to reward hyperactive or overly excited behavior. Always let your pet sniff the treat first, holding it up and away from them while you wait. Remember, pets, especially dogs, can detect scents from over 5 meters away, so there's no need to present the treat right under their nose. Once they catch the scent, dogs may initially become overly excited or jump around. If this occurs, communicate your disapproval through your demeanor and body language. Your patience will lead to a well-mannered pet. They will soon learn that a calm approach yields results, sitting patiently while gazing at you in eager anticipation. At the moment of calmness, reward them with the treat. Do not use treats to reinforce excited behavior; instead, use them to encourage a calm and submissive state.

Feeding Guidelines

Don’t over-treat ~ Although it might be tempting when your furry friend begs for more, practice moderation and regulate treat amounts. Treats are intended to be a supplement to your pet’s diet. Just like us, too many treats can lead to weight gain and disrupt the balance of your pet's diet, which must remain complete and nutritious for their well-being. Ideally, treats should not exceed 10% of your pet's daily caloric intake, so adjust regular meal portions accordingly to prevent weight gain, factoring in the treats consumed throughout training sessions. This also applies to treats given as general rewards for good behavior. If you don’t monitor this, your pet may gradually gain weight, and excess weight can negatively impact their health.

Treat Wisely ~ We always advise supervising your pet while they enjoy treats, especially when trying out a new one. Some dogs (though rare in cats) can be overly eager when it comes to tasty snacks, which may lead to improper chewing and potential choking hazards.

When to give treats to your pet ~ The best time to offer treats is between meals, avoiding immediate pre- or post-meal times. Choose a treat that your pet will find enjoyable. If you're using treats for training, they won't be as effective if given right after your pet has eaten a full meal.

What type of treats are appropriate for your breed, size, and age of dog or cat?
We recommend that you supervise your pet while they enjoy their treats, particularly when introducing a new one. Many dogs tend to gulp down treats without chewing, so keep an eye on them regardless of their size or age until you're confident they can handle them safely. Cats usually take their time gnawing on treats. Smaller dogs may find larger shank bones too big, while larger dogs might try to quickly consume medium-sized harder treats. Older pets with dental issues may require softer chews, so it's essential to assess your pet’s size and eating habits.
