How to install iogear-usb-ps-2-combo-kvm-switch

Installing the GCS1716 is a straightforward process that minimizes disruption to your existing IT environment. Follow these steps to deploy a reliable, scalable KVM setup that can be expanded through cascading as your infrastructure grows.

Step 1: Plan your layout and determine the console and target devices. Identify where the keyboard, mouse, and monitor will be housed, and map each connected computer to a unique port or port group on the KVM switch. If you anticipate future expansion, allocate additional space and plan for cascade connections to future switches.

Step 2: Connect the console devices. Attach your keyboard, mouse, and monitor to the console ports on the KVM switch. Ensure that the monitor has the correct video connection type supported by the KVM unit and the target computers. Verify that cable lengths are appropriate for your workstation and rack configuration to prevent signal degradation.

Step 3: Connect each computer to the KVM switch. Use USB or PS/2 cables for keyboards and mice according to each computer’s capabilities, and attach the appropriate video cables to the computer’s video output. Route cables cleanly to minimize clutter and maximize airflow in the rack or workspace, using cable ties or management brackets as needed.

Step 4: Power the system and test basic switching. Plug the KVM switch into power and verify that the console devices are recognized. Use the switch’s front-panel controls to cycle through connected computers, confirming that video, keyboard, and mouse signals are properly transmitted to each machine. Address any device-specific driver or OS considerations during the initial boot sequence.

Step 5: Implement cascading if needed. If you plan to cascade additional GCS1716 units, connect the cascade interfaces per the manufacturer’s instructions, ensuring proper alignment of master and slave units. After cascading, test switching across the newly added machines to validate that the expanded matrix responds quickly and reliably to console commands.

Step 6: Labeling and optimization. Document port assignments and label cables to facilitate future maintenance or expansion. For optimal performance, keep power supplies and signal cables organized to minimize interference and ensure stable operation under heavy workloads.

Step 7: Documentation and ongoing support. Maintain a quick-reference guide for your IT staff that outlines common switching commands, cascade configurations, and troubleshooting tips. Regularly update firmware or software if provided by the manufacturer to benefit from improvements and security fixes. With proper maintenance, the GCS1716 can support a large, dynamic environment with minimal downtime.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What does the GCS1716 KVM switch do?
A: It enables access and control of up to 256 computers from a single console (keyboard, mouse, and monitor). It supports cascading with up to 16 additional switches to expand the total reach, making it ideal for large IT environments that require centralized management of many servers or workstations.

Q: Does this KVM switch support both USB and PS/2 devices?
A: Yes. The GCS1716 is designed to work with USB and PS/2 keyboards and mice, providing compatibility with a wide range of peripherals and existing hardware deployments. This flexibility helps IT teams protect investments in legacy devices while adopting newer equipment.

Q: How scalable is the solution?
A: The switch is highly scalable. It supports up to 256 computers from a single console and can cascade up to 16 additional switches. This modular approach lets organizations grow their KVM management capacity incrementally without replacing their core equipment.

Q: How should I install and organize the wiring?
A: Plan the cabling carefully to minimize clutter and ensure reliable signal transmission. Use separate cables for console devices and each computer, and route cables along rack rails or wall runs with proper labeling. For cascading deployments, follow the manufacturer’s guidance to connect cascade ports correctly and test the expanded matrix thoroughly before production use.

Q: Is there any software required to operate the GCS1716?
A: Generally, KVM switches of this type operate independently of software, relying on hardware-based switching mechanisms. Some environments may enhance management with external monitoring tools, but basic operation—switching between machines, cascading, and console control—does not require additional software. Always refer to the product manual for any model-specific software options or firmware updates.

Fabric shaver works fine but the shield gets in the way, and the included lint roller is terrible
Color: Sage, Size: Large, Color: Sage, Size: Large
I ordered this to replace an older, smaller fabric shaver that still worked fairly well but had an extremely annoying battery compartment that would slide open during use. I do not have that issue at all with this one. In fact, the compartment is almost a little too secure, as it can be difficult to open and I sometimes make a mess when emptying it, but that is likely just something I need to get used to. The shaver itself works well enough overall, but I do think the fabric shield should be adjustable to sit closer to the blades. You can rotate it to change the position, but it does not get close enough to the fabric to work effectively without applying extra pressure. Once I figured out how much pressure is needed, it performed consistently, and I am generally satisfied with the results. I also prefer this handle style over the electric razor style shavers, so the grip and overall shape worked well for me. The included lint roller, however, is awful. Mine arrived noticeably warped and looked almost like it had water damage, even though it was fully sealed in plastic. I am not sure what caused that, but it was barely usable out of the box, so it did not feel like a major loss. The adhesive sheets are extremely thin and feel more like slick, lightly sticky wax paper rather than the thicker paper style sheets I normally use. The perforation is also poorly designed, which makes removing used sheets frustrating. The sheets kept peeling incorrectly until I realized you have to tear them straight across horizontally, similar to separating toilet paper. Even after figuring that out, it was still annoying to deal with. To make matters worse, the handle started cracking almost immediately once I applied enough pressure to actually roll it across fabric. At that point, it was effectively unusable.aaaAAA I mainly ordered this bundle for the large fabric shaver, which I didn't see sold separately on Amazon. I think $14.99 is a reasonable price for this type of shaver, but the cost could likely be lower if they did not include the low quality lint roller.

Not the best
Color: Beige, Size: Large
Not the best fabric shaver I’ve used, by a long shot. While I appreciate the shield for protecting expensive fabrics, it stands in the way of being able to effectively use this. I have some thinner cashmere and merino sweaters with some pilling that I was really hoping to fix and this didn’t do a good job and was more of a headache due to the shield problem. The lint roller is okay but not as much adhesive as others I have so is not as efficient at picking up lint and requires multiple rounds to remove the lint. It’s lightweight and straightforward to use but wish it worked better. This is okay for the price but spending a few bucks more will get you a set that’s more effective, which is worth it in the long run to save you time on what should really otherwise be simples tasks to do.

Works great and lovely color!
Color: Beige, Size: Large, Color: Beige, Size: Large
A decent lint remover and great fabric shaver. I have so many tops that bead and this fabric shaver has become a most effective way to remove those little fuzzies and beaded areas of fabric that make my tops look old. This makes my clothes look new. It’s extremely easy to use but it does not include the 2 AA batteries you’ll need, so definitely grab you some. It’s durable and does the job fast. Overall, very handy, a good value, and excellent quality. I would recommend!
