The album received the Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999.
The Penguin Guide to Jazz rated it four stars, calling it a “colossal achievement” from Hancock at 24. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic described it as Hancock’s finest ‘60s record, balancing accessible jazz with hard bop.
