Guillotine, V-cut or punch — which cut to choose?

Cut Type Result Draw Ideal for
Guillotine This model Clean straight cut across the entire cap Wide and open — ample draw All sizes — universal and versatile
V-cut V-shaped notch in the cap Concentrated — more intense flavors Straight cigars (Robusto, Corona) — thick wrapper
Punch / Piercer Central perforation of the cap Narrow — precise and concentrated draw Round-headed cigars — preserves the wrapper intact
Scissors Curved cut adapted to the shape Variable — depending on the cutting angle Figurados, Torpedo, Piramides — irregular shapes

Why the guillotine is the choice for beginners and experts: the straight cut is the most universal — it works on all sizes, all wrappers, and all desired draw levels. It's the first cigar cutter to own, and the most used even by seasoned aficionados.

How to properly cut a cigar with a guillotine?

1
Locate the cutting line — the cut should be made just below the cigar's cap, where the wrapper begins to curve. Generally, 2 to 3 mm is sufficient. Cutting too low risks unraveling the wrapper.
2
Open the guillotine completely — insert the cigar's cap into the ring, holding the cigar perpendicular to the blade. Do not tilt it — an oblique cut creates an uneven draw.
3
Slice with a dry, quick motion — do not hesitate, do not saw. A single swift and decisive movement produces a clean cut. A hesitant cut frays the wrapper and generates tobacco residue in the mouth.
4
Check the cut — blow gently into the cigar before lighting to ensure a smooth draw. If the resistance is too strong, remove an additional 1 mm.

The most common mistake: cutting too deeply into the cigar's cap. A cut that is too low will cause the wrapper to unravel and create a chaotic draw with tobacco residue. Always start with 2 mm and adjust if the draw is insufficient.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a single and double blade guillotine?
A single blade guillotine (this model) cuts from one side — it is effective on most cigars with standard wrappers. A double blade guillotine cuts from both sides simultaneously for an even cleaner cut, especially recommended for fragile Connecticut wrappers or large ring gauge cigars (56+). Both produce excellent results with good technique.
Is this cigar cutter suitable for a Cohiba Robusto (ring gauge 50)?
Yes — the ring gauge 50 of the Cohiba Robusto is well below the limit of 55 (22 mm) for this model. It is also suitable for the Montecristo No.2 (ring gauge 52), the Partagas Serie D (ring gauge 50) and almost all common Robustos, Coronas, and Churchills.
How do I maintain the blade of a cigar cutter?
Wipe the blade with a dry cloth after each use to remove tobacco and wrapper oil residue. Stainless steel does not rust, but accumulated residue can dull the blade. Occasionally sharpen with a small whetstone if the cut becomes less clean — or replace the tool if the blade is chipped.
How many mm should be cut from the cap of a cigar?
Generally 2 to 3 mm — just below the wrapper line, where it begins to curve. Cutting too little results in an insufficient draw. Cutting too deep causes the wrapper to unravel and creates residue in the mouth. If you're unsure, start with 2 mm and adjust by blowing gently before lighting.
Is the guillotine cigar cutter suitable for Torpedo and Piramides?
Yes, with caution. For figurados (Torpedo, Piramides, Belicoso) with pointed caps, the guillotine should be applied higher — about 5 mm from the tip to create a sufficient opening. A punch is often preferred for these shapes to preserve the wrapper's form.

Solved Specific Need
Size: 10 Ft (Type B with Clamp), Color: White
Nice product which solved a problem of needing USB power clamped to a very thick work table. Most power strips with a clamp do not accommodate thick tables between 1.75" and 2" so I was happy to find this one. Successfully provides power to all my USB devices even a laptop (although charging is a bit slower compared to the OEM power adapter).

One minor bug
Size: 10 Ft (Type B with Clamp), Color: Black
I received this today and mounted it to the table I have next to my recliner. I plugged it into a remote control outlet so I can turn everything off at once. I used two of the AC outlets for the power recliner. I then plugged a USB powered fan into one of the USB-A ports. I plugged the power cable from a set of speakers positioned next to the headrest of the recliner into the other USB-A port. I used one of the USB C outlets to charge my tablet. When I hit the switch on the remote control to turn off power to the strip before going to bed I discovered a bug. The only way I can describe it is a cross port power bleed. After killing power to the strip my speakers were still playing, not well as they had static. I discovered by trial and error that if I unplugged my tablet the problem stopped. Apparently if you have something with a battery plugged into one of the USB ports and have something plugged into the other USB ports it pulls power from the device with the battery to try and power the other devices plugged in. Other than this one problem it seems to be just what I was looking for.

Mounts to desktop
Size: 10 Ft (Type B with Clamp), Color: Black
Helps keep the desktop clutter down. Sometimes I need to charge flashlights, earphones, hearing aids, portable battery chargers and the like. I don’t want to plug these onto my computer so this unit fits that need. Sturdy desk mount so one hand plugging in and unplugging usually works fine.

Decent, gets warm though
Size: 10 Ft (Type B with Clamp), Color: Black
Compact with a nice long power cord. However, it does get warm, which makes me nervous, seeing as it is clamped to a wooden table...
