The artistic duo is back by popular demand with the latest in their Impossimal drinks series: 'The Shaker Maker', featuring their own twist on a menu of the classic cocktails we all know and love. The Shaker Maker sees the Impossimals bring out in glorious bold colour the fun we know and love, coupled with a bit of Dutch Courage and remind us to find the humour in life, ourselves, and the times we share with friends and family!

In a traditional still-life composition creating a visually appealing and balanced image, the “Too Hot To Handle” is vignetted by a classic and simple black background. The bold colour is incredibly punchy, completely focussing the attention on the tantalising tipple and scene at hand. Ever a fine artist, this piece has been painted in vivid oil paint with the incredible craftsmanship we have come to expect from skilled still-life painter, Peter Smith. The piece shows the duo’s brilliant artistry given the complexity of the composition – the beverage which is instantly recognisable, the Impossimal positions carrying the visual humour and the title to pull everything together.

Avid collectors of a huge range of rare and classic memorabilia the new originals are reminiscent, to those of keen eye, of the original Cluedo cards. Peters’ artworks, always incredibly intricate and complex, often feature these clever hidden references making them subtly familiar to the eye! Using traditional materials and techniques, the new originals are created in rich, vibrant oil colour and texture achieving a realistic and nuanced finish. With an incredible amount of preparation in the studio before an original is painted, Peter often crafts his paintings in 3D by hand allowing him to honour the artform of still life painting and explore the interplay of light, form, colour, and texture in a controlled and creative way.

With the Impossimal humour in every piece, everyone can find a little bit of themselves in this new collection. Contemporary and vibrant, Peter and Jayne continue to explore new concepts within the genre, often pushing the boundaries of traditional still life with their unbridled creativity and humour.

This piece is a Hand Varnished Giclée on Canvas and can be purchased in a set.

An essential book on U.S. race and capitalism!
Format: Paperback
One of the most important books on race and capitalism ever written. Such a nuanced study of the California penal system that includes the racist structure of the United States’ criminal justice system, but goes far beyond to analyze how capitalism and profit drive politicians, police, investors, landowners, and working class people—white and Black—to expand the prison system in an age of dropping crime rates. I teach it regularly to undergraduates and graduate students, and it drives fascinating discussions.

Format: Paperback
If anyone has mastered the political economy and geography of prisons in California, it is Ruth Wilson Gilmore in Golden Gulag. Gilmore does a great job of discussing and parceling out the very complex and complicated relationships that exist between capitalism as a system that produces our material world alongside economic crises, and the function of prisons to absorb, manage, relocate and "hide" those very crises in the era of neoliberalism. She also skillfully reminds us over and over that it is black and brown working-class poor communities that bear the brunt of this kind of system that also expresses it's power via white supremacy. I am finding this book very useful and chock-full of interesting information for my current research. People may find the book a difficult read because it loaded with information and technicalities they are unfamiliar with, but these are good reasons to struggle with a text and truly grasp the increasingly intricate processes that determine and guide the world we live in (and the places we may end up locked in!). As Marx said, there is no royal road to science and knowledge.

Format: Paperback
I'm still reading it but its a great book. It makes me think about how much money is invested in keeping poor and people of color populations in prison. The prison industrial complex is no joke. This book provides the studies, chart and details of what I always thought. There's plenty of money to be made keeping the 'right people in prison' and finding new victims such as immigrants and school kids.

This was a good expose on how our government secures monies without you being aware of it for use in their useless game of punishment and the ultimate ruination of the towns in which they place these freaking Hell-holes
