Background
CD88, also known as C5a receptor 1 (C5aR1), is a G protein-coupled receptor that plays a crucial role in the immune system. It is primarily expressed on various immune cells, including neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, and some endothelial cells. The binding of the anaphylatoxin C5a to CD88 triggers a wide range of biological responses, such as chemotaxis, degranulation, and the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are essential for the recruitment of immune cells to sites of infection or inflammation. Additionally, CD88-mediated signaling can enhance phagocytosis and promote the activation of the immune response.
