This map is an original creation by our design studio at Africa Map Art and is based on data from various up-to-date sources. Greyton's history is unique for its origins as an "agricultural village" established by an Englishman, Herbert Vigne, in 1854. Named after Sir George Grey, the then-Governor of the Cape, the village was designed with plots made available to people of all races, a remarkable and progressive stance for its time. The town's layout and many of its original buildings, including the original leiwater (irrigation) system, have been well-preserved. Greyton is celebrated for its old-world charm, its extensive public commonage, and its commitment to conservation, which has earned it the title of one of the most preserved villages in the Western Cape.
