artist biography
William Drew was born in Melbourne in 1928. He was an Australian artist, theatre designer and art teacher.

Drew studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology before going overseas in 1963. He lived for a time in Rome, Paris and London and travelled extensively throughout the continent, returning to Australia in 1966 via the Americas. In 1968 he went to Brazil to paint the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro and later to Sienna in Italy, to paint the annual Palio festival. He has had several one-man exhibitions in Australia.

As a painter he is best know for his Byzantine inspired figurative paintings.I n addition to his fine art work he designed sets and costumers for theatre including the medieval play Adam for the Australian Contemporary Theatre Society, Sydney in 1962. For his painting he received the Robin Hood prize in 1960. 

He is represented in a number of public collections including work held in the collection of Heide, Museum of Modern Art in Melbourne and the Western Australian Art Gallery.

Drew passed away in 1983 n a car accident on his way to his second residence in Conques (a small village) near Rodez France.
