Probiotics are found in some foods like yoghurt or fermented milk, and in dietary supplements generally as tablets, powders or capsules. There many different species and strains of probiotic bacteria and it can be confusing. It is better to choose an identified strain of probiotic organism as these strains have been developed and scientifically tested for effectiveness. Studies confirm that health benefits are strain-specific and only rarely apply to generic species. A strain with more research evidence is more likely to be effective.
