With origins dating back to the late ‘80s – they began life in 1989 under the name Septic Broiler before adopting their now-iconic moniker in 1991 – Dark Tranquillity stand as one of the founding pillars of the legendary Gothenburg melodic death metal scene. Alongside peers such as In Flames and At The Gates, they shaped an entire genre, combining aggression and melody in a way that would go on to influence countless bands worldwide.
Over the decades, their evolution has been both bold and consistent, balancing haunting atmospheres, intricate guitar work, and the unmistakable voice of Mikael Stanne, whose commanding growls and emotive clean vocals became a defining feature. Signed to Century Media for nearly their entire career, Dark Tranquillity’s catalogue is a chronicle of growth and refinement, and more than three decades on, they remain one of Sweden’s most enduring and celebrated exports.
