Or, as the philosopher Baruch Spinoza asked, why do we fight for slavery as if it were our salvation? Confidence Men: The Duping of the American Mind provides a compelling answer to those questions.
Mere journalistic accounts of these hucksters have pointed out their many lies and inaccuracies, their personal failings and rank hypocrisy. Confidence Men does something different. Instead of treating these sensational figures as individual bad actors, it identifies a common philosophy that animates them all. Each of them are, in their own ways, irrationalists – believing in the power of a strong will to overcome ordinary reality (and ordinary people). Objective facts, nature, and even “human nature” melt away before the creative genius or the mystical hero. Today’s “confidence men” are the cheerleaders of hierarchy and domination, where the supreme value is one of unhinged belief in oneself. As against reactionary forms of self-help, Confidence Men proposes a rationalist alternative – neither wishing our problems away, nor “manifesting” success – but instead, understanding the world so that we can change it for the better.

Just what I needed for my home office

My desktop is an old butcher block so I opted to use the screws. It was fairly easy to install using the measuring strip that was provided. The holes you drill don’t have to be perfect because the net has elastics that you can tighten and also keep from hanging too low. The net is not visible when standing. For wire organizing the net works best for me since I travel for work and have to unplug my devices often. It keeps the floor clear and easier to clean around.

Simple and sturdy!

I really like this product. My desk is just a regular table, so I wanted something to hide by bulky laptop and monitor adapters, and this does the job perfectly. It gets everything off the floor and out of view. Plus, it comes with some bonus Velcro cable ties and adhesive cable clips to help further wrangle cable chaos. I was hesitant at first because of the price, but it’s clear that it is a sturdy well-made product. The mesh is finer than other slings I’ve seen, so cords and other things won’t get tangled in it or fall through. I didn’t end up screwing the anchors into the table like you’re supposed to; I just used some large adhesive cable clips instead, which seems to work for now. I’ll probably end up purchasing another one for my partner’s desk.

Cord coverage solution

I got this to cover the cabes under my desk. The white color blends well with the desk and the room colors. You can cover a lot of cables with it as long as they are not too heavy or bulky. Make sure to clean the area where you place the hooks or they detach after a while.
