W.A.S.P.'s self-titled debut album was released on August 17, 1984, through Music for Nations in Europe and Capitol Records in North America. Produced by Mike Varney, the album introduced the band's shock rock theatrics and heavy metal sound, led by frontman Blackie Lawless. The lineup featured Chris Holmes on lead guitar, Randy Piper on rhythm guitar, Rik Fox on bass, and Tony Richards on drums, though Fox was replaced by Don Costa during recording.
The album includes some of W.A.S.P.'s most notorious tracks, including "I Wanna Be Somebody," "L.O.V.E. Machine," and "Blind in Texas." The band's provocative lyrics and stage show, which incorporated blood, raw meat, and simulated torture, made them a target of the Parents Music Resource Center during the 1980s censorship debates. "Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)," initially intended for the album, was deemed too controversial by Capitol Records and released separately as a single.
W.A.S.P. achieved commercial success, eventually earning Gold certification in the United States. The album established W.A.S.P. as one of the leading acts in the shock rock movement and cemented their reputation as one of heavy metal's most controversial bands. Its raw production and aggressive delivery influenced the glam metal scene that dominated the latter half of the decade.
