The debut memoir from award-winning journalist Morgan Campbell: an incredible history of a family’s battles across generations, a hilarious and emotional coming-of-age story, and a powerful reckoning with what it means to be Black in Canada—particularly when you have strong American roots.

Campbell comes from “a fighting family,” a connection and clash that reaches back to the south side of Chicago in the 1930s. His father’s and mother’s families were both part of the Great Migration from the U.S. rural south to the industrial north, but a history of perceived slights and social-class differences solidified a great feud that only intensified over the course of the century after the families came together in marriage and split up across the border.

Campbell’s maternal grandfather, Claude Jones—a legendary grudge-holder, as well was an accomplished musician, peer of Oscar Peterson, and fixture of the Chicago jazz scene—was recruited to play some shows in Toronto, fell in love with the city, and eventually settled in Canada in the mid-1960s, paving the way for Campbell’s parents to join him amid the tumult of the Vietnam War and the Civil Rights movement. Campbell’s paternal grandmother, Granny Mary, however, remained stateside, a distance her schemes and resentments would only grow to fill.

That fighting spirit wasn’t limited to the family’s own squabbles, though—it animated the way every generation moved through the world. From battling back as a group against white supremacist newcomers who violently resisted Black neighbours, to Campbell’s pre-teen mother burnishing her own legend by cold-cocking some racist loudmouth bullies, the lesson was clear: sometimes words weren’t enough.

In Canada, the Campbells started a family of their own, but the tensions between in-laws never ceased, even as divorce and disease threatened the very foundations of the life they’d built. Bearing witness to all of this was young Morgan Campbell, an aspiring writer, budding star athlete, and slow-jam scholar, whose deep American roots landed him an outsider status that led to its own schoolyard scraps and exposed the profound gap between Canada’s utopian multicultural reputation and the very different reality.

Having grown up bouncing between these disparate identities and nationalities, real or imagined—Black and Canadian, Canadian and American, Campbell and Jones—My Fighting Family is a witty, wise, rich, and soulful illumination of the journey to find clarity in all that conflict.

Great Looking Suit with Lightweight Material
Color: Light Grey, Size: 7
I got this for a beach wedding and it worked out really well. It looked nice without feeling too formal, which was perfect for the setting. The material is linen and it feels lightweight and breathable. It kept my kid comfortable in the heat and didn’t feel stiff or heavy like some dress suits do. The appearance is sharp. The double breasted style makes it look more dressed up, but the linen material keeps it relaxed and appropriate for outdoor events. The fit was true to size. It sat well without looking baggy or tight, and everything stayed in place throughout the event. Quality feels good for the price. The fabric and stitching don’t feel cheap, and it held up well after a full day of wear. Suitability is great for things like weddings, parties, or photos. It works especially well for warmer weather because of the material. For value, I think it’s worth it. You’re getting a nice looking suit with comfortable material that actually works in real situations. Overall, great fit, breathable material, and a clean look that works really well for events.

Very nice linen suit for boys. Well worth the piece
Color: Beige, Size: 12
This JPF Double Breasted Linen Suit for Boys is the cutest thing I've ever seen! I got itt for my 8 year old and he loves it! He tried it on at soon as we received it and wore it all evening. Lol. He looks so grown up! He's about 4'3", about 75lbs. I ordered a size 12 and it fits him the way I'd expect it to. A bit big but he has room to grow into it. It is a 2 piece suit, with pants and blazer only. It's a summer suit, it's meant to have a more laid back, casual style. It is so nice! The style and color are identical to the photo. I got the beige color, that's the color my kid picked. I do worry a bit about staining, considering an 8 year old boy will be wearing it, but hopefully any stains will be easy to remove. The quality is excellent and the price isn't bad either. I highly recommend this suit

A charming summer suit
Color: Light Grey, Size: 6, Color: Light Grey, Size: 6
This suit fit true to size. The light grey wasn’t exactly the same as advertised (see photo), but I still really like it. My son felt snazzy in this suit, and he said it was comfortable to wear.

Nice suit for the price!
Color: Light Grey, Size: 12, Color: Light Grey, Size: 12
This really is a very nice boys suit, especially for the price they are asking. My kids don't wear suits too often, maybe once or twice a year for special occasions so I don't need really expensive suits for them. The material is actually really nice on this. The color looks great and the pieces are sewn nicely. The adjustable waist band is really nice on the pants because my kids are on the slimmer side and this helps with fitting. You can also wear a belt with these if needed. I washed on delicate cycle and dried on delicate cycle a little, then finished by air drying. They washed and dried very nicely with minimal wrinkling. The front pockets are real and useable on these, which isn't always the case with boys suits. Overall would 100% recommend

Nice looking suit that runs big
Color: Light Grey, Size: 6, Color: Light Grey, Size: 6
This is a beautiful light, gray linen suit size 6. It looks high end and it is a baggy fit, not slim. This suit is double breasted with a satin lining inside. There are two pockets in the jacket and one small smaller pocket for a handkerchief on the jacket. I did order a size 6 but this fits way too big for a size 6 I’m thinking it was more like a seven or an eight. The pants have a zipper, which moves very easily and 2 pockets. The Pants have belt loops. Both the the pants and jacket are longer than normal. My son is tall, so I was really surprised that these are so baggy and so long. I would definitely double check the size. there’s no size chart online so maybe I would go one size down. It does look like a quality made suit. The sizing is just off.
