What is the DysGraphia Type Remediation Assessment (DGTRA)?

The DysGraphia Type Remediation Assessment (DGTRA) is a quick, web-based assessment that generates customized reports that address the common symptoms of dysgraphia and uses a Likert scale to report answers. Suitable for Kindergarten and above, the DGTRA helps determine whether there is enough reported symptomatology to warrant a suspected diagnosis and reveals specific subtypes for targeted remediation. The comprehensive report also provides remedial strategies, teaching suggestions, and recommended reasonable accommodations.

  • Question Structure: This assessment utilizes Likert scale items to gauge the presence and intensity of symptoms. These items were carefully developed based on a thorough review of the literature and the DSM-5 SLD with impairment in written expression criteria.
  • Practical Scenarios: The questions present real-life situations, allowing students to accurately reflect their symptom levels.
  • Adaptability: This assessment is versatile and can be completed by students, as well as practitioners, teachers, or parents. This multi-perspective approach provides a well-rounded view of the student's abilities and challenges.
  • Assistance for Struggling Students: For students who find reading or reasoning challenging, the assessments can be taken with support. This support might include having the questions read aloud or discussing them to ensure clear and accurate responses.

What is Dysgraphia?

Dysgraphia is a specific learning disability (SLD) or writing disorder associated with impaired handwriting, spelling, written language/composition skills, and finger dexterity (muscle movements required to write). It often coincides with other learning difficulties such as dyslexia and developmental coordination disorder.

Are There Different Types of Dysgraphia?

Yes, there are several subtypes of dysgraphia:

  • Acquired Dysgraphia: Results from a brain injury, disease, or degenerative condition.
  • Developmental Dysgraphia: Refers to difficulties with writing as one develops.
  • Motor Dysgraphia (Peripheral Dysgraphia): Results in messy, slow, and often illegible handwriting, poor tracing and drawing skills, and slow finger-tapping abilities. These issues stem from difficulties in fine motor coordination, visual perception, and proprioception. However, oral spelling is usually preserved.
  • Spatial Dysgraphia: Causes difficulties in spatial perception, leading to poor spacing of letters and impaired drawing abilities. Individuals with this form of dysgraphia struggle with spontaneous writing and copying text, while oral spelling and finger tapping remain intact.
  • Linguistic Dysgraphia (Dysorthography or Dyslexic Dysgraphia): Impacts the written language skills required in the writing process. Spontaneous writing exhibits extra or omitted syllables or letters as well as awkward spacing, letter sizes, and capitalization. Writing is time-consuming, labored, and many words can be illegible.

Lots of squeakers in this one!
Color: Gator, Size: Large
Our rescue dog is a power chewer so this one doesn't last long, but I still gave 5 stars because it's not advertised for power chewers, so I knew what we were getting when we bought it. So why did I buy this for our dog? The number of squeakers... the dog goes nuts for those and it makes the toy last longer because she will only play with the ones that still squeak.

NOT for aggressive chewers!
Color: Lion, Size: Medium
My aggressive chewer had destroyed this in 3 minutes! Chewed off the ears, and chewed apart the body to try to get to the squeaker - it was in the trash 5 minutes after I gave it to him! Yes, the seams are tough, but he easily chewed around them. Don’t buy this if your dog is an aggressive chewer!

Somewhat durable.
Color: Elephant, Size: Small
My dog loves these toys, I think it's the squeaker. I've tried several and this elephant one holds up the best.

Not tough enough
Color: Elephant, Size: Small
It might be tough, but my 26 pound dog managed to rip it open in record time! The only good thing, the squeaker is a long plastic one and easier to grab before she can swallow it!

Cute and tough!
Color: Elephant, Size: Small
Update Dec 2025, still going! This toy has been the subject of much squeaking and death shakes... And more than one tug o' war... And other than looking a little dingy even after washing it's as good as new! No missing bits, no noticeable damage. I have several in the brand, both the larger version for my mastiff, and other styles for the medium-sized dogs. I started buying online because the one store that carries it moved further away. Outshines all other brands I've tried for durability and fun play. In 5years and 9 dogs only 2 have needed replacement. Worth the price!!!
