artist bio
Silvia Virve Leitu-Tannberg was born June 1, 1912 in Tartu , Estonia. She was an Estonian-Swedish painter and costume designer.

She was the daughter of the official Eduard Leitu and Juliane Mari Uin and in 1940 married architect Harald Tannberg. She studied art in Estonia at the Pallas University of the Arts from 1932 to 1938 with Estonian Modernist painter Nikolai Triik as a teacher. She continued her study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich from 1944 to 1946 under German illustrator Emil Preetorius. She initially began showing her work during her time studying in Estonia where she exhibited in a number of group exhibitions. She had solo exhibitions of her work in Munich in 1947, Toronto in 1962 and in Gothenburg and Stockholm in 1953. Select group exhibitions she participated in include ones in Germany in 1946 to 1949, Statens Museum in Amsterdam in 1949, exhibitions in Denmark (Copenhagen and Charlottenburg) in 1950, and in Sweden - at Falun in 1952, Halsingborg 1952, Gothenburg Art Salon in 1953, Stockholm in 1953,  and then at galleries in North America - New York in 1954, Toronto in 1954, and Petterson, California in 1955.

She painted still lifes, figures and portraits predominantly in watercolour. In addition to her art, she was worked as a costume designer for various theatres. Leitu-Tannberg is represented private collections in Estonia, Germany, Sweden and the USA and in the public collection at the National Library of Estonia.

Leitu-Tannberg passed away on June 21, 1969 in Tureberg, Stockholm.
