What nutrients can you find in Manuka honey?**
Packed with a diverse range of nutrients, manuka honey contains up to four times more nutrients than regular flower honeys. What's the difference between NPA, MGO and UMF?**
For commercial reasons, different symbols are used to represent the activity strength of manuka honey. The three most common are NPA, MGO and UMF.
NPA – All types of honey possess a natural property known as peroxide activity, which contributes to their natural potent properties. However, in regular honey, the compound responsible for this activity is unstable and easily loses its effectiveness when exposed to light or air. On the other hand, manuka honey has non-peroxide activity (NPA), which is provided by a highly effective and much more stable compound. The NPA of lab-verified manuka honey from Australia and New Zealand allows it to remain potent and less affected by natural heat, air or sunlight.
MGO – Methylglyoxal is a naturally occurring compound that can only be found in manuka honey. It is measured in parts per million (ppm) and used as an indicator of the strength of manuka honey's NPA.
UMF – Unique Manuka Factor (UMF) is a measurement standard that is based on the amount of beneficial compounds present in manuka honey. Developed by the UMF Honey Association in New Zealand, it is a quality trademark that guarantees the authenticity of a manuka product. A higher UMF rating indicates superior quality.
