Seiko’s Seikomatic-R line marked an important step in the brand’s rise during the mid-1960s, combining understated design with genuinely advanced mechanics for the era. This example from July 1965 captures that perfectly, with its clean silver sunburst dial, sharp dauphine hands, thick applied indices and the classic dolphin caseback found on many higher grade Seiko models of the period.

Inside is the 30-jewel Seiko 8306 automatic movement, featuring both automatic and manual winding, something still relatively uncommon at the time. The bilingual day wheel can be advanced by repeatedly pulling the crown, an early semi-quickset system that feels wonderfully mechanical compared to later solutions. The date itself is adjusted conventionally through the hands.

The watch remains in very good condition for its age. The dial shows light wabi-sabi around the Seikomatic-R text and near the outer edge, adding character without distracting from the overall appearance. The case has seen a light polish at some point, though the original lines are still clearly visible. It comes fitted on a new leather strap with a versatile 18mm lug width, making strap changes easy. Fully serviced in Japan in July 2023, the movement is running strongly and performing well on the timegrapher. It is running well and ready for daily wear.

Details
Introduced in 1965, the Seiko Seikomatic-R represented a turning point in Seiko’s mid-century mechanical watchmaking. Positioned just below Grand Seiko, the line was aimed at Japan’s growing business class and combined understated design with genuinely advanced engineering for the era. The 8306A movement sat at the heart of many Seikomatic-R models, a 30-jewel automatic caliber developed by Suwa Seikosha with both hand-winding capability and day-date functionality. At a time when many automatic watches still relied purely on rotor winding, the addition of manual winding made the movement far more practical for everyday use.

Technically, the 8306 was built around durability and refinement rather than raw specifications. It ran at 18,000 vibrations per hour, using a robust bi-directional automatic winding system and a relatively slim architecture that allowed Seiko to produce elegant dress watches without sacrificing reliability. The movement became known for its smooth winding feel, stable timekeeping and long service life, qualities that helped establish Seiko’s reputation outside Switzerland during the 1960s.

Today, the Seikomatic-R remains historically important because it captures the moment Seiko evolved from a domestic manufacturer into a serious global competitor in high-grade mechanical watchmaking.

Letdown after ESA & OGS but Still a Great Summer Read
Format: Hardcover
Highly anticipated after 2025's One Golden Summer sequel to Every Summer After because The Florek boys are everything. Loved the setting (Tofino sounds gorgeous), but the book was off balance. Long-suffering George was so thoughtful & obviously in love with his BFF Frankie. Other than shared history, I wondered why. She's supposed to be independent (as was Jo in her fave book Little Women), but she spends a lot of time sobbing, moping, resenting, & pushing everyone away. She's oblivious to George's obvious devotion even when he's traveling the world for work & firmly consigns him to the friend zone (but doesn't date anyone else beyond a device driven brief engagement to wildly unsuitable guy). At 30, she still thinks romance will kill their 22 yr friendship? Even their magical week in Tofino when they're together is unsettled by her reticence & constant disbelief they can be a couple. There are a lot of flashbacks to the besties at 8, 12, 16, 20, & last year that disrupt the flow & don't serve the story. Still, she writes beautiful sentences and has the ability to transport. It's a good book, just a 4 not a 5.

George was awesome...the setting was beautiful...not a fan of Frankie
Format: Hardcover
I had to buy this book since One Golden Summer was amazing and stayed with me longer after I finished it. In this book, the setting and descriptive scenery of their honeymoon destination and how it was woven into the story was the highlight. The romance took second place and was lackluster overall as I never really connected with why Frankie was such a good friend and George fell in love with her. The ending was just okay and I think the letters could have been better utilized in the story instead of dumped in at the end. The whale storyline was a footnote and distracted from the story. It could have been a few chapters shorter overall. I loved George and felt like he deserved better.

OH, GEORGE!!! 😮‍💨🫠 What a perfect friends to lovers summery romance. Fortune has become a fast favorite of mine to just make my heart ache. Yes, Frankie is oblivious, slow and frustrating at times but it was such a lovely, scenic and magical story! 🥰🥰🥰

predictable but enjoyable
Format: Kindle
Very obvious plot, but still enjoyed the character and storyline development. If you’re looking for a mindless, easy romance then I would recommend this.

This stuff really works — turns sunburn into a tan! ☀️🌺⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I was skeptical, but this really does what it says! I got a little too much sun and used this right after showering no peeling, no pain, and within a day or two, my skin turned a gorgeous golden brown instead of burning. It feels soothing, smells great, and absorbs quickly without being sticky. Definitely a must-have for beach trips or after any sun exposure. I’ll never go without it again!
