Ten Maps that tell you everything your need to know about global politics - the million copy international bestseller

Geography shapes not only our history, but where we're headed...

ON THE RUSSIA/UKRAINE CRISIS - What is driving Russia's foreign policy? Why do Putin's actions mirror those made in the past? Prisoners of Geography analyses the geographic weaknesses and historical invasions of Russia's territories, exploring how they have ultimately shaped the decisions of its leaders past and present.

All leaders are constrained by geography. Their choices are limited by mountains, rivers, seas and concrete. Yes, to follow world events you need to understand people, ideas and movements - but if you don't know geography, you'll never have the full picture.

If you've ever wondered why Putin is so obsessed with Crimea, why the USA was destined to become a global superpower, or why China's power base continues to expand ever outwards, the answers are all here.

In ten chapters and ten maps, Prisoners of Geography looks at the past, present and future to offer an essential insight into one of the major factors that determines world history.

It's time to put the 'geo' back into geopolitics.

'Like having a light shone on your understanding... I can't think of another book that explains the world situation so well. - Nicolas Lezard, Evening Standard

'Sharp insights into the way geography shapes the choices of world leaders.' - Gideon Rachman, Financial Times

Ten maps; ten chapters:

Russia * China * United States of America * Latin America * the Middle East * Africa * India and Pakistan * Europe * Japan and Korea * the Arctic

About the author

Tim Marshall was Diplomatic Editor and foreign correspondent for Sky News. After thirty years’ experience in news reporting and presenting, he left full time news journalism to concentrate on writing and analysis.

Originally from Leeds, Tim arrived at broadcasting from the road less traveled. Not a media studies or journalism graduate, in fact not a graduate at all, after a wholly unsuccessful career as a painter and decorator he worked his way through newsroom nightshifts, and unpaid stints as a researcher and runner before eventually securing himself a foothold on the first rung of the broadcasting career ladder.

After three years as IRN’s Paris correspondent and extensive work for BBC radio and TV, Tim joined Sky News. Reporting from Europe, the USA and Asia, Tim became Middle East Correspondent based in Jerusalem.

Tim also reported in the field from Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia during the Balkan wars of the 1990’s. He spent the majority of the 1999 Kosovo crisis in Belgrade, where he was one of the few western journalists who stayed on to report from one of the main targets of NATO bombing raids. Tim was in Kosovo to greet the NATO troops on the day they advanced into Pristina. In recent years he covered the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, and Syria.

He has written for many of the national newspapers including the Times, the Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, and the Sunday Times.

Tim’s first book, Shadowplay: The Overthrow of Slobodan Milosevic, was a bestseller in former Yugoslavia and continues to be one of the most highly regarded accounts of that period. A second book, “Dirty Northern B*st*rds!” and Other Tales from the Terraces: The Story of Britain’s Football Chants was published in 2014, to widespread acclaim. His third book is ‘Prisoners of Geography’ and has been published in the UK, USA. Germany, Japan, Turky, and Taiwan. His latest book is ‘Worth Dying For. The Power and Politics of Flags’. The paperback, and a U.S version of this are due out in the spring of this year.

Very practical and so far its working great.
This outlet extender is super practical! I installed it just behind a night stand to extend the outlet above it. The built in USB C ports can fast charge a Samsung S25 on a MagSafe base, so they are at least good for 15W. The outlet came disassembled and very well packed. There are 3 extensions included to change the reach of the outlet, but for a nightstand, a single extension was all that is needed. The outlets on the extender are nice and tight and like mentioned before, the USB ports work well and are very convenient to have. There is also an On/Off switch at the top of the extender you can use to turn off all the devices connected to it. Overall a great kit, that seems well made and should hopefully last a long time. So far I can recommend it.

Finally, a smart solution for that impossible outlet behind the couch
I have one specific outlet in my living room that drives me absolutely crazy. It’s directly behind our heavy sectional sofa, and every time I need to plug in a laptop charger or the vacuum, I have to literally wrestle the furniture away from the wall and blindly reach down into the dark. When I saw this TROND extendable outlet stick, I bought it immediately hoping it would solve that exact headache. It totally did. The design is brilliant. It’s modular, so you can adjust the length anywhere from 16 to 39 inches depending on how many segments you screw together. I used all three pieces so the actual power strip sits right at the perfect height just above the back of the couch. Now I have five outlets and two USB-C ports right where I can actually reach them. The USB-C ports charge my phone quickly, and having built-in surge protection gives me peace of mind for my electronics. Plus, the 360-degree rotating plug lies completely flat, so the couch can push all the way back against the wall without bending any cords. I did run into one quirky issue when installing it, which I took a couple of photos of to show you. In the US, our wall outlets are usually installed with the round ground prong on the bottom. However, the plug on this device is oriented with the ground prong on the top. If you plug it into a standard outlet, the cord wants to run upwards instead of down. Fortunately, it’s an incredibly easy DIY fix. I just went to my breaker box, shut off the power to the living room, unscrewed the wall outlet, flipped it upside down so the ground prong was on top, and screwed it back in. It took less than five minutes and completely solved the problem. Even with that minor orientation quirk, this thing is a total game-changer for awkward living room layouts. If you're tired of scraping your knuckles trying to reach behind furniture, this is worth every penny.

Perfect kitchen wall outlet
Size: 3 FT, Size: 3 FT
This is the perfect solution for a kitchen wall outlet that is plugged into the unused second socket behind the refrigerator. Now I can leave my blender and food processor on the small countertop next to my refrigerator. So convenient! And also a good spot to charge my cell phone.

Perfect for hard to reach outlets
Size: 3 FT, Size: 3 FT
The quality of the outlet is good. Functions perfectly has two Usb 2.0 ports and one Usb C port. Charges as normal chargers do. It is easy to use and worth the cost. The tapes for the clips doesn’t work on cement walls so I recommend using the https://amzn.to/4hoc2Qe with what I always use to adhere to cement walls.
