The previous owner Joseph found the wooden cat ornament at a boot sale in Buckinghamshire — a sleek little thing, hand-carved, painted in a garish red and green coat like it had wandered out of a cursed Christmas market. The stall owner, an elderly man in a cravat and elbow-patched blazer, offered only a warning:

“It keeps coming back. Just… don’t name it.”

Joseph, of course, named it “Sir Scratches.” He laughed all the way home.

That night, odd things began. His curtains drew themselves. The kettle screamed even when unplugged. His Alexa ordered “a bulk pack of mousetraps” on Prime.

By the third night, he awoke to soft scratching — not at the door, but from under the bed. The next morning, all his socks had been shredded into the shape of tiny sweaters.

He tried to bin it. Burn it. Mail it to his ex in Cornwall. It came back each time, freshly dusted, always perched somewhere just behind him.

Then one morning, Roger found a message carved into his bedside table:

“9 lives. 8 left.”

He hadn’t been scratched. Yet.

He decided to donate the cat to us, with the hope that the new owners will keep its coat nicely polished.
