Skin pigmentation is a natural protective process, but when melanin production or movement becomes unbalanced, it can lead to uneven tone and hyperpigmentation. 1. Melanin production (bottom layer – melanocytes)

• In the dermis (basal layer of the epidermis), special cells called melanocytes produce melanin.

• The pigment is packed into small structures called melanosomes.
