By: David MargolickFINALIST FOR THE PEN/JACQUELINE BOGRAD WELD AWARD FOR BIOGRAPHY • FINALIST FOR THE MARFIELD PRIZE • FEATURED ON CBS SUNDAY MORNING • From longtime New York Times and Vanity Fair writer David Margolick comes the first definitive biography of Sid Caesar: founding father of television comedy and icon to generations of Americans.
“Whip smart. . . . A nuanced appreciation of Caesar’s comedy and the overall atmosphere of TV’s early days.” —Esquire
By the spring of 1954, Sid Caesar was the most influential, highly paid, and enigmatic comedian in America. Every week, twenty million people tuned their TVs to his NBC extravaganza, Your Show of Shows, and witnessed his virtuosity in sketches and film spoofs, pantomime and soliloquy. Onstage, Caesar could play any character and make it funny: a befuddled game-show contestant, a pretentious German professor, a beleaguered husband (opposite his redoubtable co-star Imogene Coca)—even a gumball machine and a bottle of seltzer.
To Caesar’s mostly urban audience, his comedy was an era-defining leap forward from the days of vaudeville, launching a new style of humor that was multilayered and full of character, yet still uproarious. To his rivals, Caesar was the man to beat. To his fellow American Jews, his show’s success meant something more: a post-Holocaust symbol of security and a source of great pride. But behind all that Caesar represented was the real Sid. Introverted and volatile, ill at ease in his own skin, he could terrorize his collaborators but reserved his harshest critiques for himself. After barely a decade, he was essentially off the air, beset by exhaustion, addiction, his own impossibly high standards, and changing viewership as television spread to the American heartland. TV’s first true comic creation was also its first spectacular flameout.
But in his wake came the disciples he personally nurtured—including Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner, Neil Simon, and more. Caesar left an indelible impact on what still makes us laugh. In When Caesar Was King, veteran journalist David Margolick conjures this complexman as never before. Deeply researched, brimming with love for Caesar and the culture from which he sprang, and reanimating a New York City that has all but vanished, this rollicking and poignant book traces the rise and fall of a legend.

Precise and durable
Color: Birch
Best coffee scale for the price. No crazy features which makes it very easy to use. Small enough to store in a drawer and durable enough to not worry about it breaking. Scale is very precise which makes it great for V60 and Chemex

Great Coffee Scale
Color: Onyx Black, Color: Onyx Black
Absolutely love this coffee scale! For starters it was so well packaged. It is definitely worth what you pay for it. It has a silicon removable mat that fits snugly over the top of the scale. That makes it easy to pop it off to clean if you spill on it. The scale responds instantly to changes in weight which helps to give you accurate pour over results every single time.
The scale also includes a built-in timer with a count-up or down control. It also has an auto shutoff but gives you plenty of time before it shuts off. There are multiple units to choose from when measuring. Overall just a really great scale and I'm so glad I purchased it!

great scale (read tips for its super sensitivity)
Color: Onyx Black, Color: Onyx Black
in hopes this will help anyone else who bought this scale- this thing is super sensitive to vibrations. if your scale is getting off calibration for seemingly no reason, make sure the sides and the back aren’t touching anything else and that the bottom is on a flat surface and it will fix it entirely, trust me!! but aside from that, this scale works absolutely perfectly. it’s just the right size for my morning coffee, has great battery life, and is really straightforward to use. plus the silicone top makes it really easy to clean and looks nice on my countertop. the timer is super convenient for making coffee, this is an amazing scale for this price point

1 year review: Excellent coffee scale
Color: Onyx Black
I bought this about a year ago and have used it daily ever since.
The scale is easy to read, fast to update, and is precise. My previous coffee scale cracked from the repeated heating from my v60 carafe even with a silicone pad within 6 months. This scale has endured and I'm quite happy with it's durability.
It's accurate and precise enough I actually use it with my bread machine as well. It's a nice, low weight scale overall.
Cleaning is fairly easy, I just wipe down with a damp cloth. You can pull the silicone pad off and wash it more thoroughly if you want.
My only down side is that I find the batteries drain a little quickly. My normal kitchen scale can last years on a button battery, while I usually have to replace the batteries here every 6 months. I don't use the scale for more than 3-4 minutes at a time daily and once or twice a week a second time per day, and whether the battery life is due to the brightness of the display or the polling frequency of the scale, it's a minor enough quibble to not ding it's rating.
It's not a cheap scale, but it appears to be one of those "buy once for a long time" investments. If you're serious about coffee dosing and measuring your water for pour over, it's easy to recommend.

Excellent coffee scale!
Love this scale! The display is pleasing, high-contrast and very clear. It has a silicone cover, and there are zero gaps around the screen and buttons, so it's easily cleaned and I don't worry about damaging the internals with water or crumbs.
There is a tiny bit of float, typically less than a gram, and only occasionally. For example, I'll weigh out 19.3g of beans, seal the bag, and come back to 18.9g. It's minor enough and infrequent enough that it doesn't concern me at all.
The readout is quick and responsive, and I love the timer. At first it seems a little confusing to switch between counting up and counting down, but after doing it once I have no trouble with it even half-asleep. Just hold the units button, press it again to change between modes, and use power & tare to set minutes and seconds if counting down (use play/pause to confirm each setting). Takes less than 10 seconds.
Overall it's quick, accurate, and well-made. I love that it has a much smaller footprint than my old kitchen scale, and looks sleek on the counter. Perfect addition to my coffee station! I also highly recommend their gooseneck kettle if you're in the market ☕
