artist biography
Nils Harry Johnsson was born 20 May, 1908 in Stockholm. He was a Swedish artist.
Johnson started his working life at the Norma restaurant in Sweden, and painted in the evenings and weekends. It was while working there during the war that he was encouraged to make illustrations for the restaurant. At the end of the war he left and became a full time artist. As a painter he was self taught and took study trips to France and Spain in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
Johnsson exhibited his work in solo and group exhibitions. Solo shows include Lilla Galleriet in Stockholm in 1952, and together with Carl Riise and Björn Hallström in 1955, and in Kristianstad in 1952. Select group exhibitions include one at the Sveriges allmänna konstförenings (Swedish General Art Association) salons in Stockholm in 1948, 1950 and 1952, Färg och Form in Stockholm 1949, 1950 and 1951 and in group exhibitions at Riksby school in 1948, Visby town hall in 1949 and was represented in the National Association of Fine Arts' traveling exhibition Nutida svenskt maleri (Contemporary Swedish Painting) in 1951.
He was part of the artist colony in Maglehem, Skåne. He is best known for his landscapes, beach scenes and still lifes. Johnsson is represented in the collection of the at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
Johnsson passed away in 2004.
