"It's subtle," she mused over the phone, with the kind of reverence usually reserved for wine tastings. "Like autumn decided to retire and become a wall decoration." I wasn't sure if she meant "subtle" or "looks like it was dipped in every shade of brown paint at Home Depot," but I ordered it anyway. The answer was always right there, gradient-ing its way through every possible shade of brown, like a Pantone chart for coffee enthusiasts. It had the unique ability to make everything else in the room look surprisingly colorful by comparison - which, come to think of it, might have been her plan all along.
