The Gold Tone AC-12FL is a fretless 5-string open-back banjo that’s ideal for travel, practice, or for any player looking to sharpen their old-time clawhammer chops. This banjo’s combination of an open-back design, 12-inch composite rim, and Remo LC Renaissance head provides a rich, mellow tone not often found on traditional bluegrass banjos. Moreover, the rosewood-topped nato neck’s fretless construction sports markers so even beginners can easily find their playing position. And while the AC-12FL is an excellent choice for the player on a budget, it doesn’t skimp out on functionality — the vintage style clamshell tailpiece, covered guitar-style tuners, ZeroGlide nut, and coordinator rod design ensure exceptional performance and stability.

No frets, no problem

The AC-12FL harkens back to the banjo in the 19th century, when many musicians played fretless banjos with plunky gut strings. Those instruments often offered little more than a stark black fingerboard to find your notes, but the AC-12FL’s clear and present fret markers make it a breeze to locate your playing position. What’s more, the AC-12FL comes stock with Aquila Nylgut strings — not quite true gut strings (thankfully!), yet they offer the same low-sustain thump and easy sliding feel that defined the banjo before frets became a part of the picture.

12-inch rim provides a warm, mellow response

Whether it’s your first banjo or your fifth, one of the first specs to consider is the banjo racks is the size of the instrument’s rim. While an 11-inch rim may be standard in the world of bluegrass, the AC-12FL’s 12-inch rim provides a warmer, fuller response with quite a bit more bass than an 11-inch rim. Paired with the open-back design, the AC-12FL is particularly adept at old-time frailing (clawhammer) styles or for solo vocal accompaniment.

Your new clawhammer companion

From its open back to its warm, woody tone, just about every element of the AC-12FL is fine tuned for clawhammer banjo. The wide 12-inch rim is a perfect fit for any clawhammer or old time player for its deep, full projection. And while the composite rim may not be composed of traditional wood, it delivers the same laid-back and rounded-over response required in clawhammer and old-time banjo applications.

Fine for a man (with skinny wrists)
Color: Black/Gray, Color: Black/Gray
I have an older mens ironman which has gotten a little beat up and needs replacing. The band is much longer than I need. The metal clasp sits off-center on the underside of my wrist, closer to the part of my wrist which curves around to the front. The too-long strap sometimes flops around and catches on things. I couldn't find a smaller-band mens version, so I tried this "womens" watch (picking the most manly-looking one, of course). I like it better. The band fits my wrist much better, with the metal band in the middle and no flop. I also like that the watch is lighter and the face and band are smaller and less bulky, so it is less noticeable when I'm wearing it (cycling weight weenies will appreciate this). The face is still large enough to be easily legible and contains all of the same great features as my mens ironman watch, plus the newer versions now have an hourly chime, nice! Other info: my wrist is ~17.5cm or ~7.0" around. On this watch, I use the 6th out of 9 slots on the band. On my mens ironman, I use the 3rd out of 9 slots. Weight: this one = 28g, mens = 39g. Pics show comparison of my prior mens ironman with this new "womens" ironman. Photo order is confusing (couldn't figure out how to change that). They are: (1) side-by-side, mens on left, (2) mens band (wider and clasp is off-center on my wrist, end of band hangs over the edge of my wrist -- too long for me -- catches on things), (3) womens band (less wide, clasp is more centered on my wrist and end does hang over edge of my wrist), (3) womens watch (smaller, and looks new), and (5) mens watch, looking a little beat up.

Watch holds up in saltwater!
Color: Black/Gray
I bought this watch to use for my trip to the Galapagos Islands. I read two reviews that the watch does not hold up in salt water. I went snorkeling in the ocean 6 times, about 45 minutes each time. The watch did not leak. I did take precautions by keeping the watch under my rash guard and lowering myself slowly into the water. I also rinsed off my watch each time I snorkeled. I also bought this watch for the multi time zone feature by saving the time on the west coast, east coast and Galapagos time since I cannot change the time on my Fitbit until I land in an airport. I did not use any other features of the watch because I generally use my phone or Fitbit for an alarm or timer. The only complaint I have is that Timex now discourages changing the battery by the consumer. I changed the battery myself on my old Ironman watch. The new Ironman watch is fitted with triangular head screws. So I will have to purchase screwdrivers with triangular heads when it comes time to change the battery.

Reliable and durable, even in harsh conditions
Color: Black/Gray
This watch has served me very well. From Arctic waters to long distance races, it has held up to everything except one task I asked of it, which was my fault. This watch can handle repeated free dives to 12 ft deep. It cannot handle scuba diving at the same depth for an hour straight without needing to have the battery shorted to reset it. It fits well, lights up consistently and brightly enough to read without being blinding, keeps accurate time, and generally does everything I want it to.

Ten years of ownership…Thank you, Timex!
Color: Black, Size: One Size
Solid watch for everyday wear. I have worn this watch for over 10 years. I let a watch shop replace the battery about every 18 months. Other than the original band (which lasted 5 years) I have had zero problems. Still looks great, rugged and manly😇 Overall I recommend this watch for its value, reliability, simple clear design, legible hands in all light conditions. Great watch!!!

Solid Watch for Everyday Casual Wear
Color: Black, Size: One Size
I have purchased this item other times and I’m quite satisfied with wearing this watch everyday with casual wear. The size is just right not too small or large.
