artist biography
Ivar Sture Oscar Hjertqvist , born April 12, 1907 in Härnösand. He was a Swedish painter and illustrator.
Hjertqvist studied at the Högre konstindustriella skolan (Art Industry School) in Stockholm from 1929 to1932 and was awarded a scholarship from the Slöjdföreningen (Crafts Association) which allowed him to study further at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris. He took private study trips to England, Scotland, Germany and Hungary. He first worked as an advertising illustrator. He became a member of SAFFT in 1937 and participated in its first exhibition the same year. His debut solo exhibitions was in 1944 at Gummesons konsthall and subsequently had several solo exhibitions around Sweden. He was one of the founders of the association Industrimotiv and participated in the association's exhibitions at the Technical Museum in Stockholm Eskilstuna Art Museum. He created a number of public artworks including monumental paintings in Ångermanland and Jämtland.
Hjertqvist painted in an expressionistic style with subject matter including interiors, mountain landscapes, portraits and landscapes from Ångermanland and Lapland in oil, tempera and gouache. As an illustrator his work with included drawings for author Sven Aurén's travel books.
He passed away on August 29, 1983.
