Background
Interleukin-1α (IL-1α, aliases IL-1A, IL1, IL1-ALPHA, IL1F1) is a master cytokine of the interleukin-1 family. Constitutively produced by epithelial cells, it is abundant in normal human epidermis—present in equal amounts in living keratinocytes and the stratum corneum—where it underpins the skin barrier against pathogens. Acting via the IL-1 receptor, IL-1α triggers metabolic, hematopoietic, and immune responses both at baseline and rapidly after infection. In vitro, it is active at picomolar–femtomolar levels; in vivo, it initiates immediate immune defense upon microbial challenge.
