Recorded before the arrival of longtime drummer and lyricist Neil Peart, the album features original drummer John Rutsey and reflects the band's early hard rock influences, particularly groups such as Led Zeppelin, Cream, and other blues based rock acts of the era.

The album includes several songs that would become staples of the band's early live shows, most notably “Working Man”, whose popularity on Cleveland radio helped attract the attention of Mercury Records and played a key role in launching Rush's career beyond Canada. Other highlights include “Finding My Way”, “In the Mood”, and “Before and After”.

While stylistically different from the progressive rock direction Rush would later become known for, the album remains an important document of the band's beginnings. It captures a young trio finding its footing and laid the foundation for one of the most successful and influential careers in rock music.
