Educational Information John Smith During the first year of the colony, leadership was weak but improved when Captain Smith became President in the fall of 1608. He was not well liked because of his strict rules. He returned to England in 1609. Settler with Musket After 1609 every man in the colony was required to train daily in the use of the musket, sword, and the wearing of armor. A colonial militia was organized in 1622. Workman with Ax The first fort was built soon after the settlers arrived in May, 1607. Once the walls were in place, the colonist began construction of buildings inside the fort. Female Settler Gardening Women planted “kitchen” gardens, growing vegetables and herbs for cooking and medicinal purposes. They also did the cooking, sewing and laundry, as well as tending livestock such as chickens, goats and pigs. Female Settler Cooking English women cooked over an open hearth, preparing traditional English meats but adapting the recipes to foods that were available in Virginia. Blacksmith The Fort blacksmith repaired tools and military equipment. In the first years, the blacksmith probably produced very few items since most tools and weapons were brought from England. Chicken Chickens were brought over from England and provided the colonists with meat and eggs. Pig Pigs were imported from England and allowed to forage freely. They soon became too numerous and were rounded up and taken to an island in the middle of James River. The island is still called Hog Island. Ship The settlers arrived in the New World after a 4-month, 6,000 mile voyage. The 3 ships they sailed on were the Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery. Sailor with Navigational Device The ship’s navigator used devices such as the cross-staff to determine the ship’s latitude by measuring the angle of the sun. Cannon Cannon were brought over from England on the ships. After the fort was built, cannon were placed in raised areas at each corner to defend the fort from attack. Fire The settlers cooked over an open hearth.
