Extreme Networks 5420F 24-Port Fiber Switch

The Extreme Networks 5420F 24-Port Fiber Switch is a high-density, modular fiber-powered network solution built for demanding enterprise environments. Designed to expand your fiber footprint while preserving performance, this switch offers 24 SFP slots, enabling flexible optic connectivity and scalable Layer 2 switching. With its built-in power features and emphasis on stack bandwidth, the 5420F is ideal for data centers, campus cores, and edge deployments where reliable, low-latency fiber transmission is essential. Whether you’re consolidating workloads, increasing backbone capacity, or creating resilient, multi-site networks, the 5420F delivers dependable throughput, straightforward manageability, and room to grow without a full rack replacement.

  • High-density fiber connectivity: The Extreme Networks 5420F provides 24 SFP slots, allowing you to deploy a dense fiber fabric across campuses and data centers. This design supports a broad range of transceivers for long-haul, metro, and short-range links, giving you the flexibility to adapt to evolving network requirements. As fiber demands increase with traffic growth, the 5420F preserves port footprint while expanding aggregate bandwidth, helping you avoid costly overhauls.
  • Modular, scalable architecture: Built for growth, the 5420F’s modular design enables scalable deployment where you can add capacity as needed. It is structured to handle layered network strategies—predominantly Layer 2 switching with VLAN segmentation, robust link aggregation, and enhanced traffic management—to optimize performance in mixed workloads. The switch is engineered to maximize stack bandwidth, distributing aggregate throughput across stacked units to outperform a single-port bottleneck and deliver resilient, scalable performance for large enterprises.
  • Reliable power and streamlined deployment: The switch comes with a built-in power supply to simplify installation and reduce clutter in rack spaces. This design supports clean cabling and straightforward power management while delivering stable operation for continuous workloads. For IT teams managing dense fiber networks, the integrated power option means fewer external components to manage, supporting quicker deployments and easier maintenance.
  • Enterprise-grade features for security and performance: The Extreme Networks 5420F emphasizes performance with features commonly found in enterprise-class switches, including VLAN-based segmentation, traffic prioritization, and quality of service (QoS) controls. It also supports robust management capabilities that help administrators monitor, configure, and secure fiber networks, ensuring consistent performance across the fabric. With native support for stacking and efficient utilization of fiber ports, you gain predictability and easier orchestration of large-scale deployments.
  • Ideal for data centers and campus networks: Whether you’re building a fiber-centric data center spine, extending a campus core, or consolidating edge connectivity, the 5420F meets the demands of modern networks. Its 24 SFP slots enable flexible deployment topologies and rapid scalability, while its stack-friendly design supports resilient, aggregated bandwidth across multiple units. The switch is suited for organizations prioritizing fiber efficiency, low latency, and streamlined management in a robust enterprise environment.

How to install Extreme Networks 5420F 24-Port Fiber Switch

  • Plan and prepare: Assess your fiber topology and decide which SFP types (single-mode or multi-mode) and speeds (as supported by your transceivers) will be used. Map out VLANs, trunk ports, and stack configuration if you intend to deploy multiple units for high availability.
  • Rack and power: Mount the 5420F in a standard 19-inch rack with proper airflow. Connect the built-in power supply to a reliable power source. Ensure adequate cooling and clear rack space around the device to promote airflow and reduce heat buildup.
  • Connect fiber cabling: Install fiber cables to the SFP slots using appropriate LC connectors and the proper fiber type. Maintain proper bend radii and follow cable management best practices to prevent signal degradation and ease future maintenance.
  • Initial configuration: Access the switch management interface to configure basic settings such as management IP address, VLANs, and port configurations. Define trunk ports for inter-switch links and set up any required QoS policies to prioritize critical traffic.
  • Stacking and verification: If deploying multiple 5420F units, configure stack settings to enable aggregated bandwidth and redundancy. Verify link status on all SFP ports, perform basic throughput tests, and monitor power and temperature indicators to ensure stable operation.
  • Security and maintenance: Apply access controls, enable monitoring protocols (SNMP or equivalent), and establish backup configurations. Document your topology and keep firmware updated to protect against vulnerabilities and ensure compatibility with connected transceivers.

arm holes too large, shirt too long, size down
Size: Small, Color: Wine
I am 110 pounds and 5’2”. I ordered a small. The fabric feels awesome. The neck area and straps are perfect. However, the arm holes are quite large. The bottom of the arm hole isn’t straight down, flush with the shirt. It angels outward. If you lift your arms up it looks odd. I should have ordered an extra small. But even if I do that, I still think the arm hole will look odd. I will likely return this or wear it at night or at the gym with yoga pants. The shirt is a tad bit long. If you wear short shorts, the shirt would cover your shorts.

WELL CONSTRUCTED. GOOD STITCHING ON NECKLINE AND SLEEVES. GOOD FOR TALL PERSON.
Size: X-Large, Color: Orange
The Automet women's loose-fit tank top is sized just right for me. I'm 5'11', 200 lbs., 57 years old. I've got some back fat that would be obvious in a tight top. This tank is loose enough to hide my back fat but not too loose. From the front, it does not appear loose at all. It's the back area that has extra room. It has a nice, scooped hem. One special feature is the double stitching on the neck and shoulders. It is well-made. It looks more expensive than it is. I bought the Automet tank top in the color orange. It is NOT see-through, nor is it thick. I live in Arizona, in the desert part, where it gets hot. This tank is thin enough to keep me comfortable from May to October when the heat hits. It's hard for me to find the "perfect" tank. I've tried so many. I feel you would be wise to give this tank a try. Worst case, you return it. I love the orange one so much, I plan to purchase all the colors for this hot summer coming up. I wish all of you the same happiness I have found with the Automet tank top.

Comfortable and convenient
Size: 34, Color: Kangaroo
Got these to replace some old cargo shorts that aren't made anymore and are developing holes. So far I have been very pleased. The waist fits true to size and the fit is relaxed through the seat and thigh, which is exactly what I was looking for since I have somewhat stout thighs relative to my waist. I'm 6'0", about 200lbs, with a 34-35" waist. The material feels sturdy without being overly heavy, about as thick as old ripstop BDUs. Front slash pockets are generously deep; no problem carrying a 5.5" smartphone in there. Rear pockets are sufficiently deep and are narrow enough that a trifold wallet won't turn itself sideways. Cargo pockets are adequately sized and have hook and loop closures at the corners. The "tech" pocket behind the left cargo pocket is very convenient for me, as I'm used to carrying my phone on that side. I can slide my Samsung Galaxy S25 in there and it fits well without worrying about it falling out. I wore these for a couple of days at Disney World last week and they performed very well. Moving my phone to that tech pocket made rides with lap bars or belts much more comfortable. I even washed these shorts at the resort so I could wear them on the long drive home. If I could change anything about them, I'd add about an inch of length, as I prefer a full 11" inseam on cargo shorts. And maybe add a button or some kind of closure to the rear pockets. But aside from that, these have been pretty close to perfect. I expect I'll order more as I replace more of my older cargo shorts.
